While we’re on the subject of Ingmar Bergman, let’s talk about Bergman parodies. To gauge the Swedish’s master’s impact on 20th century culture, one needs to look no further than YouTube, where you’ll find “Bergmanesque” clips from Mystery Science Theater 3000, French and Saunders and an Alamo Drafthouse video contest. Then there’s the above clip, which appears to be an NYU student short. Titled simply Thirst, its YouTube summary reads in part: “What if director Ingmar Bergman did a commercial for Coca Cola? Written and directed by Leslie Chase, the film is set in the late 50’s and follows the thirsty, lonely lives of two Swedish sisters.” It’s tribute, it’s dead-on parody, and it’s genius.

I can’t find my favorite Bergman parody online, although I have it at home on VHS. It’s from a Muppet TV special called “The Muppets Go to the Movies,” and it’s a silent film from Gummo Bergman (Ingmar’s brother) called “Silent Strawberries.” Contains one of my favorite lines to quote: “If you do not wish for death, how about a rubber chicken?” I’ve been trying to find it online, but no luck so far.

That sounds awesome. You should upload it, if you can.

SCTV’s combination of Hour of the Wolf, Cries and Whispers and Persona has always been a favorite comedy sketch of mine. Note the delicious fake Swedish. And Catherine O’Hara is just a beauty. Enjoy:

I remember seeing somewhere a parody of Ingmar Bergman’s works by French and Saunders, very funny stuff. Does anyone know where I might find it again? It was on youtube, but now I can not find it.
