Welcome to The Media Diet, a new feature on SpoutBlog where we ask indie film movers and shakers a bunch of stupid questions about movies, videos, tabloid scandals, celebrity diet secrets, and other cultural detritus.
Up first is David Wain. Wain first skyrocketed to hipster notoriety in the early-90s as a member of The State. He went on to direct the genius Meatballs parody/tribute Wet Hot American Summer, which Wain co-wrote with fellow State alum Michael Showalter. Now Wain has cast a passel of former State-ees in his second directorial effort, The Ten, which opens this Friday. The film, a sketch-driven re-telling of The Ten Commandments, also stars Paul Rudd, Winona Ryder and Liev Schreiber. Click through the jump for Wain’s thoughts on desert island must-haves, comedy based on advertising, and Charlton Heston’s finest hour.

Spout: You’ve made a movie about The Ten Commandments, so I have to ask: what’s your preference between Moses Charlton Heston, and gun-toting, “Get off my lawn, Michael Moore!” Charlton Heston?
David Wain: The truth is I’ve never seen Chuck do Moses - definitely have to Netflix it. I’m primarily a fan of his work as the patriarch on the Dynasty spin-off The Colbys.
Spout: You’ve been banished to a desert island for the rest of eternity. This desert island happens to have a complete home entertainment system made out of coconuts. What DVDs, records, video games, etc do you pack?
Wain: Shudder To Think Box Set, Geek Love, Woody Allen Box Set, The West Wing
Spout: Geico Caveman sitcom — are you pro or con?
Wain: Con.
Spout: True or False: By making a film in which Paul Rudd has to chose between Famke Jansen and Jessica Alba, I, David Wain, am really trying to get one million fanboys to contemplate having to choose between Jean Gray and the Invisible Woman. Thus, I am fully aware that I may be indirectly responsible for inducing about 800,000 fanboy heart attacks.
Wain: False. My goal was to gather Jessica Alba, Famke Janssen, Gretchen Mol and Winona Ryder together in one movie, so no matter what your type, you can drool over at least one of them.
Spout: Have you seen anything on YouTube lately that just blows your mind?
Wain: My favorite online video of all time is the Atlanta reporter who’s stomping grapes and falls. I could watch it on a loop endlessly and always find new exciting layers. In fact, THAT is what I’d take to a desert island.
