Why can't we love both Star Wars and The Seventh Seal. I think I agree with Paglia here. I love Bergman, but that doesn't mean I have to denigrate the pop sci fi that shaped much of 20th century film.

i think you and Paglia are right. love them or hate them, there's little doubt that the Star Wars films will always be remembered when considering late 20th century cinema. although it's very possible that the abbreviated version would be something like, "the ground-breaking original trilogy spawned a global subculture, and another trilogy, which unfortunately did not live up to the original." i'd be happy with my grand kids reading that.

Ms. Paglia wrote: "We who revered those great artists, we who sat stunned and spellbound before their masterpieces — what have we achieved?" Then goes onto say that *maybe* The Godfather comes close, while Star Wars is a classic - not as art, but as pop culture.

While Bergman and Antonioni shaped her generation with cinema as art, only Coppala has come close for the later Boomers. Lucas, on the other hand, created a pop culture phenomenon that lead to the rise of Marvel Comics movies for Gen X,Y and Z.
