Groucho in the Speakeasy — Clip of the Day

Bob at Forward to Yesterday informs us that yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the death of Groucho Marx. If you’d like to honor the godfather of motor-mouthed, self-reflexive comedy by watching Horse Feathers or Duck Soup, you need look no further than YouTube. I’ve embedded the speakeasy scene from the former above, and as a bonus, you get a chunk of Zeppo singing “Everybody Says I Love You.”

I had forgotten just how funny the Marx brothers were. So much better than any comedy I’ve seen the last few years.

A very good friend of mine found Borat very funny. I just find it stupid. When I look back at this clip from true masters of the art, my opinion is reinforced a hundredfold.

Back in the late sixties before Universal Studios became Studio City’s answer to Disneyland and I was in the ninth grade, I caught 4 out of the 5 Marx Brothers movies done at Paramount at a single setting. They were shone at the open air Amphitheatre and all were greeted with great laughter and applause.

At that time, Animal Crackers was held up due to some legal issues with the George Kaufman estate or so were we told. Besides Horse Feathers, where this came from, we saw The Coconuts, Monkey Business and arguably their best, Duck Soup.

Their Paramount pictures were the best ones and will remember Groucho, Chico and Harpo as one of tbe comedy teams were ever lived.
