People go to Syria primarily because they can't afford/can't get visas to go anywhere else. Ideally, the goal is to bring the band to the US, but as this country has only accepted 400-something Iraqi refugees since the start of the war, that probably won't be possible right away. That's equivalent to an additional 23 million Mexicans crossing into the US over a 4 year period. Imagine the impact.
