FilmCouch #40
A new doc about Kurt Cobain redeems years of shoddy journalism about our cultural icon. A self-indulgent Hurricane Katrina film pricks a nerve in Karina Longworth.
When filmmakers betray the documentary they’re making. Karina wrestles with The Axe in the Attic, a documentary where the filmmakers hijack their own story by inserting themselves into it. Kurt & Courtney (1998), Nick Broomfield’s attempted investigation into Kurt Cobain’s life and death, is a classic example of the same folly. But AJ Schnack’s Kurt Cobain About a Son (opening tonight) sets a new gold standard for self-restraint.

This post 9/11 documentary has been circulating the web. I don’t know if you guys have talked about it on the podcast in the past but I would REALLY love to hear your take on it. I know you guys are probably sick of post 9/11 documentaries but this one seems to be raising a lot of skepticism. It’s free on this website:
