There’s a Korean movie called Juno Jenny that has something to do with two teens and the night of awkward passion that leads to an unplanned pregnancy. This is news to Diablo Cody, who wrote the script for Fox Searchlight’s much-splooged-over Juno, which is about two teens and the night of awkward passion that leads to an unplanned pregnancy. She blogged the other day about her movie’s “spiritual cousins” which, as she puts it, “is a much nicer way to point out a cool/weird coincidence than going ‘OMG PLAGIARISM!’”:

There’s no adoption subplot and apparently the film is otherwise dissimilar to mine, but how fucked up is that? I bring this up because a journalist drilled me about it recently–awkward!–and also because I saw someone on our IMDB board wondering if Juno was a remake of the K-flick. So for the record, 1.) it isn’t a remake 2.) I haven’t seen Juno Jenny, though I want to now, and 3.) I don’t think anyone would even bat an eye about this if my film was called Jenny. The name Juno is just so darned distinctive that confusion is inevitable.

More on Juno’s various spiritual cousins at the link.

there is no such thing as coincidence in show business.

The movie is a remake…if she denies that then its plain outright plagiarism

the nerve of the woman…you can’t fool people by switching names from girl to boy and adding a subplot and call it brand new….

Diablo cody, will you help me write an original screenply.
It’s called “The Lord of the Necklace” In this story there is a
hobbit named Legolas who has a necklace and must destroy it
before the evil lord Samwise can get it back and take over the
world. To destroy the ring, Legolas and his trusty sidekick
Gimli, must take a boat across a huge ocean in order to drop the
necklace in the deepest part of the ocean.

Sound familiar…well its not. Because the names are different
and although the main plot is similar the subplot is different.

I cannot believe that Cody won an oscar for this, it just shows
how morally corrupt hollywood is that its most honored award is
given to a thief and a hack. SHAME

The movie title Juno is “coincidently” similar to the korean film, with basically the same story/plot. And it’s not a remake?, then I guess it’s plagiarism.

You guys are UNBELIEVABLE. Instead of being happy that someone is doing something productive with their lives (by giving them the benefit of the doubt) you go on and criticize! But please go on if that makes you feel better…

yea! it is a remake!! wtf

It might be a complete ripoff of the Korean movie, but the underlying plot is the same. Seems a bit convenient that both of the main characters are named JUNO, which, in itself, is unique. The logical conclusion would be that someone got the general idea from someone else, most likely the story that came first (*cough* Korean movie *cough).

    Have a look.

Sure there’s not an adoption plot, but great job in taking someone else’s general idea and making millions off their genius. The least Ms. Cody could have done is given credit where credit is due. Isn’t that the best thing about movies/stories? That they can be shared….. not stolen.
