What you should see but may not know is showing this weekend: Does Your Soul Have a Cold? by Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), a documentary about depression and the pharmaceutical invasion of Japan playing on IFC. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford by Andrew Dominik, the best movie to come out of Hollywood you’ll have to strain to find. And a four and a half hour documentary by cinema legend Peter Bogdanovich on none other than… Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?

Until you guys mentioned Oceans 11, it had somehow completely slipped my mind that Casey Affleck has played second fiddle criminal Brad Pitt three times before (although I seem to remember the full gang was minimized in Ocean’s 12. All I remember from that one is Catherine Zeta Jones marching off a plane, and that horrible bit with Bruce Willis). Anyhow, as both the Oceans films and Jesse are so clearly about the heirarchy of criminals and the attractions of celebrity, it would be interesting to compare and contrast the two, especially in regard to Casey and Brad.
Thought you guys might also be interested in Desert Bayou (http://www.desertbayoumovie.com, opening in LA on October 26th, at the Laemmle Sunset 5, with director Alex LeMay doing Q&A sessions after the film at 7:30pm on the 26th and 27th.
The Village Voice review says it is “…a poignant indictment of a social disaster that began long before New Orleans’ poor, black, and elderly citizens were abandoned to die.”
Thanks, Christina. I’m actually dying to see Desert Bayou, but I missed it when it was in New York two weeks ago. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to see it soon.
