Not that I should be worried about any speculation found in Entertainment Weekly, but I was annoyed this past weekend when I saw the magazine’s “Oscar Buzz-O-Meter”, which is only the latest place to find Amy Adams listed as a highly potential Oscar nominee for Enchanted. The piece notes that, “glowing reviews for her regal turn in Enchanted — and the $70 million it grossed in its first 12 days — could earn Adams her second Oscar nomination.”
Variety also now has Adams listed as a potential dark horse contender in the race. Other places she’s recognized include the Associated Press, Hollywood Elsewhere and The Envelope, which claims she’s a lock for the fifth spot, going up against Marion Cotillard, Keira Knightley, Julie Christie and Ellen Page.
Really? Is this seriously being considered one of the five best lead performances by an actress this year? Sure, I can understand predicting her as a Golden Globe front-runner (she’ll even win in the comedy category, no contest), but the last time I checked, charm isn’t exactly the same thing as acting. And if it were, I still wouldn’t pick Adams over Waitress‘ Keri Russell, who has also been championed by some as a dark horse contender. Besides, isn’t Ellen Page already the obligatory comedic (and charm) presence in the race?
Don’t get me wrong, I like Amy Adams; I thought she was a fine pick for the supporting actress category for Junebug two years ago. I also think she’ll one day get a second nomination for something more … well-deserved. But in Enchanted she’s just a rehash of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman mixed with Darryl Hannah in Splash. And even though Roberts received a nomination for playing that gold-hearted prostitute, her movie was like Citizen Kane compared to Enchanted (to use such a cliche analogy).
I’m already shocked enough that so many critics let themselves review Enchanted so favorably. Let’s hope having a huge gross and a high Rotten Tomatoes rating is the best Disney will achieve with such uninspired fluff.
Meanwhile, at The Reeler, S.T. Vanairsdale is calling Marion Cottilard the most over-hyped lead actress of the season. The alternatives: Lust, Caution’s Tang Wei, Black Snake Moan’s Christina Ricci and The Treatment and Turn the River’s Famke Janssen.
I think Adams had a realistic shot when she did “Junebug”
