The Writers Guild of America have called off their annual awards show, ostensibly because they’d rather not lavish free praise and attention on studio product whilst in the middle of an agonizing labor war with the studios. They still plan to announce the winners in their three categories on February 9.
The Weinsteins have finally hammered out that rumored deal with the WGA. It’s said to be “nearly identical” to the United Artists deal, except it covers TWC’s genre subsidiary Dimension as well as the flagship studio proper.
Variety continues to use the word “crossover” to describe Juno’s success, and if they’re not getting special kickbacks from Fox Searchlight every time they do it, then I’m convinced they’re doing it just to spite me. This time, it’s in the context of the question of “whether Juno can outperform Bucket List and First Sunday.” White kids, black kids, or people who have been in a nursing home since Jack Nicholson won his last Oscar: which demographic will come out in full force? Ready, set … prognosticate!
