AJ Schnack has some notes on the lineup for the 2008 True/False Film Festival, which I’m super excited to be attending for the first time this year. While the line-up features several holdovers from previous festivals (including Sundance hits American Teen and The Order of Myths, and Cat Dancers and Audience of One, both of which screened at SXSW in 2007), and a “Secret Screening” that sounds suspiciously like one of my favorite films from last year, there’s also, according to AJ, “more than a dozen” films having their US premiere at the festival. Some of the titles that caught my eye after the jump. True/False begins on February 28 in Columbia, MO.

…an Alternative to Slitting Your Wrist

Synopsis from the film’s website: “What if every single person in the world took a year out of their life to do all the things they’ve always thought about doing? Start and finish a movie, make someone’s dream or wish come true, spray-paint an inspiration message on city property, burn their regrets to the ground. And with this thought I began compiling a list of 52 things which I would complete, one a week for the next year of my life.” The “I” is director Owen Lowery. See a trailer above, as well as clips here.

Carny

True/False synopsis: “Unusual access to the lives and loves of those who call the midway home.” Based on Virginia Lee Hunter’s photo book Carny: Americana on the Midway, shot by Hunter and directed by Allison Murray. See a lengthy, beautifully shot trailer here.

Forbidden Lies

Synopsis from True/False: “Norma Khouri wrote a best-selling memoir about her best friend’s shocking honor killing in her native Jordan — but she’s also a compulsive liar whose book may be an audacious hoax.” Here’s a trailer.

Sweet! Glad you’ll be there. It’s one of my favorite festivals I’ve been to. I’ll be helping them out on projection - at the Blue Note theater. Come say hi!
