Your review is the best of the lot referenced from IMDb, as I appreciate trying to write one of my own after seeing the film at the SFIFF. The "self-contained rebuttal" line is excellent. A little correction: Joanne "storms out" of the cab in the Marina. That's where she lives, not Russian Hill. But that's immaterial. All your points are good, and it's hard to talk about this film.

while the reviewer's courage to recognize her naiveté in her review is applaudable, it still is sad to know that there are paid critics out there thinking shots can be uniformly graded as one big visual metaphor, or black people should not ask themselves what it means to be black in our current America, and then justify it by lamenting the lack of role models for two full-grown adults. better to declare one's ignorance honestly than to hide it I guess.

Re: "self-contained rebuttal to claims that precious, naturalistic dramas about the existential dilemmas of hipster singles are exclusively a white man’s game", since the claim link goes to my post re: lack of minority participation in the '07 Generation DIY fest @ IFC Center;

What I was saying then was that great indie films by & featuring minority talent have been around for a while, before & even during the 1st days of mumblecore, but they were ignored by the Gen DIY fest (that's pretty much what i was saying). A few months later it is nice to see an interesting indie film by a minority director be included in SXSW. Perhaps greater ethnic diversity will be the way of the future for US indie fests, press, & industry as a whole. That would be cool.
