Star Wars Fans Boycott (some) Weinstein Films

If you love Star Wars then don't go see Superhero Movie.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard a movie fan, blogger, filmmaker or anyone else complain about Harvey Weinstein, I’d be as rich as George Lucas. And speaking of Lucas’ money, the Star Wars creator ought to take some of his coin and throw it at ol’ “Harvey Scissorhands” — to purchase Fanboys, that is.

Turns out Weinstein is once again guilty of taking a film into his own “hands”, as it were, according to Wired’s Underwire Blog. This time it’s with Kyle Newman’s Fanboys, which tells the story of some uber Star Wars fans who attempt to see The Phantom Menace before it’s official release date, because one of them is terminally ill with cancer and might not be around by then. Apparently, in the latest edit the boy’s illness is played down (notice how it isn’t mentioned in the trailer above either) and the overall tone of the film is more mocking towards Star Wars fans in general.

Wow. Not only is The Weinstein Co. unaware of how a plot catalyst functions, it seems to not know how to cater to an appropriate demographic. Fortunately, there is a new hope: a website titled “Save Fanboys” has gone up to direct our rage against the man they’re now calling Darth Weinstein (this photoshop really made my birthday). First up is a fan-wide boycott of Weinstein movies, beginning with next week’s release, Superhero Movie (does anyone really need a reason to boycott this movie?). Additionally, fans are encouraged not to rent or buy or go to see any Weinstein Co. film (feel free to watch Miramax titles, though) and are invited to participate in protests happening on March 28 in L.A. and New York.

Here’s what I don’t understand, though: since Lucas enjoyed the movie and approves of it, why can’t he just get it distributed properly and appropriately at Fox? Fanboys has no business being at The Weinstein Co. And even if it does, shouldn’t Kevin Smith be getting more involved? Interestingly enough, the “Save Fanboys” Weinstein boycott has made an exception for Smith’s work. So hopefully, if not Lucas, than Smith should get his butt over to a meeting with Harvey and make a case for the Fanboy fans.
