It's what I would do were I to kidnap, torture, and kill someone. I was enraged that they had kidnapped and were torturing Tony Stark, but the waterboarding was completely natural. I think the only message that the filmmaker intended to send was, "Hey, look; they're waterboarding him because they're evil," not, "Hey, look; they're evil because they're waterboarding him."
