Tom, I don't think its quite the same. Iron Man's ejaculations are a statement of manhood, a confidence about sex; what Sex and the City fans are doing are solipsistic, its about loneliness more than anything. That makes me sad, that the girl culture is about being alone and the boy culture is about public virility. But, alas, that's how I see it.

For me, the failure of SEX AND THE CITY is the way in which it narrowed life down to a series of consumer choices, each one of equal value to the next; Brunch, clothes, shoes, sexual partner, dinner, club, car service. The only relationships that were inviolate were the female friendships; If the characters on the show gave their partners and boyfriends and hook-ups (or family? where was a single family member? Ever?) the same understanding that they gave one another, maybe the characters could have been happier. Instead, life becomes one big, dissatisfying shopping trip; How can you ever be sure you've got the biggest (pun intended) and best product when your consumer need is constantly refreshed by the newest and latest models? Men are the same as shoes.

That said, Karina, you have masturbation on the brain, eh? Iron Man ejaculating via his hands, women touching themselves to the fantasy of old SATC episodes... Hmmm...

No Karina, you're not being unfair. I've had the same thoughts about the Sex and the City phenomenon but I have often squelched my contempt because I don't want to run the risk of sounding just like a 'dude who has a problem with chick flicks or women expressing their independence'. So, reading this post was refreshing.

Sex and the City is an utter wish-fulfillment fantasy and I've never fully understood the appeal of the show. Sure, it was once a big deal to have women talk in sexually frank matter on television, but was the entire show really progressive and groundbreaking? Personally, I think the Golden Girls was more revolutionary, and more realistic to boot.

But what about those of us who still hold to the fantasy that someday we'll rescued by Robert Downey, Jr. himself? (Or more likely that was the other way around, but yeah...!)
