Ten Avengers Characters Who Should Be in the Movie (But Probably Won’t)

Now that we’re sure there’s an Avengers movie on the way, and that it will be tied into the movies Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Ant-Man and Captain America (full title: The First Avenger: Captain America), it’s time to begin speculating on what other characters will be cast to fill out the team’s roster.

In addition to the four characters starring in their own preceding titles, as well as cameo-man Nick Fury, there’s a good chance we’ll see Vision and Black Widow rounding out an even six team members. Yet I speculate on the basis that I haven’t picked up an issue of any Avengers title in at least a decade.

Still, I’m excited about the film and have hopes of seeing at least one of my favorite, deserving superheroes end up on the big screen in The Avengers since none of them will likely get their own movie. Plus, a bunch of them allow for more Marvel movie tie-ins. So, I ask that Marvel Studios feature a lucky seven teammates and showcase at least one of the following come 2011:

  1. Ms. Marvel – Neither a favorite nor too familiar a character for me, but seeing as comic book movies are so lacking in female superheroines these days, I feel The Avengers needs at least one other woman besides Black Widow. And as a bonus, there could be a post credits cameo from Anna Paquin, as X-Men’s Rogue. Then, if there’s ever an X-Men 4, or if Rogue gets to appear in a Gambit movie — or god forbid her own solo release — the girl could finally fly (at Ms. Marvel’s expense, of course).
  2. Hawkeye – Back when I was reading comics, Hawkeye was on the West Coast Avengers team, but there’s no reason he couldn’t be back in New York for the movie. At least let him cameo in order to refer to the existence of the other team, which would never get its own film. I feel Iron Man already (unintentionally) hints at the importance of Hawkeye when the terrorist Raza mentions the historical significance of the bow and arrow, so why not write the archer in? Oh, and don’t dare change the colors of his costume. It’s one of my favorite superhero color schemes of all time.
  3. Quicksilver – Who wouldn’t like to see this speedy character in a movie? Or multiple movies? I’m not sure if X-Men Origins: Magneto will be out prior to The Avengers, but there’s a great opportunity to introduce Magneto’s kids in that movie, with a possible post credits cameo from the kids all grown up. One of which will be Quicksilver, dressed in his blue uniform with the sash-like lightning bolt, played by whoever will play him in The Avengers.
  4. Scarlet Witch – Of course, if you’re going to have Quicksilver, you must also have his twin sister. And she too would be introduced first in the Magneto movie.
  5. Black Panther – Seeing as how John Singleton can’t get his Black Panther movie greenlit, perhaps we need to see the African superhero in a team-based film first and later receive his solo outing. Hopefully Marvel and Paramount don’t think they’ve already sufficiently filled their black quota for the film with Nick Fury.
  6. The Wasp – Though I never paid much attention to her, The Wasp has been around since the inception of the Avengers and so she should probably get a role in the movie. We could certainly use more ladies in the mix, even if they are miniature. Of course, unless she lands a significant part in the Ant-Man film (which might actually come after The Avengers), it could easily be argued that one small superhero is enough.
  7. The Hulk – It’s possible that Marvel is already planning to involve the Hulk in the Avengers movie, especially since this summer’s The Incredible Hulk is rumored to be tied-in with a cameo from Tony Stark/Iron Man. Yet despite the character’s involvement in the founding of The Avengers, the Hulk is a little too overpowering for a team-based movie, especially in his giant, CG-rendered motion picture form. Perhaps a cameo would be nice, though, if Universal allows it.
  8. Namor (Sub-Mariner) – Another character who is set to receive his own film, which just doesn’t seem to be on the fast track of late. Introduce him in The Avengers and then spin him off into oceanic adventures by his lonesome.
  9. Moondragon – I’m not too familiar with this character, but in case I didn’t make it clear: WE NEED MORE LADIES. But why Moondragon over Tigra, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman or any other superheroine? Because bald women are super sexy in science fiction and comic book movies (see Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Alien³; V for Vendetta).
  10. Beast – Sure, we already saw him in action in X-Men: The Last Stand, but we could do with more continuity tie-ins, right? If Kelsey Grammar would be interested, Marvel should consider featuring the blue-furred mutant in his second team-based movie.

after reading more at Wikipedia it seems a lot of early avengers stories were about getting the hulk under control. In some ways the hulk might even be a great main villain for the movie. I’m super excited about all this continuity.

Nice list — and I totally agree with you about Hawkeye’s costume.

But if I were to pick a couple more from the “cool looking costume” pool, I’d go with Vision, Falcon and Yellowjacket over a few of these ones. And for a real oddball choice I’d go for Jocasta, the female robot.

  • rewinn said

What I like about Hawkeye as a choice is that he’s a character, not just a hero. He’s always seemed to be overcompensating for being basically a one-trick carny trying to make the bigtime. This makes him interesting; how does he avoid getting the cr*p beaten out of him?

Likewise, WASP: one trick PLUS a love of costume changes. It would be a great running sight gag for her to be wearing something different in every scene, as long as they didn’t spoil the joke by trying to explain it! She might be a better choice than Hawkeye since, as you say, We Need Women!!!

  • Eugenia said

There can’t be Avengers and Scarlet Witch without The Vision. Their story is too cool to be missed, as it can serve as the romantic part of the movie.

  • Spinx said

I think Hawkeye will almost certainly be in the film. As they are making an Ant-Man film, I assume he’ll also be in the Avengers movie and therefore most likely Wasp will be too. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are both very likely too, especially if they feature in the Magneto movie. I guess Namor’s involvement may depend on whether his film gets the go ahead.

I would have thought it will star or at least feature:

    Iron Man
    Captain America
    Ant-Man
    Wasp
    Hulk
    Thor
    Hawkeye
    Scarlet Witch
    Quicksilver
    Namor
    Nick Fury

I think Black Panther should be in the film because hes a tight hero hes just not very known but this movie could change that and create his own spin off solo film. I use to read his comics I just wish they wouldnt have put that cape on him and left with the classic costume all black no gold nails or gold belt nothing because at marvel.com his stats are way higher than captain americas hes probably the most powerful black hero in marvel even wakanda stated at marvel is the strongest nation in the marvel universe and in the comics black panther defeated him to help him with his situation in the story anyways thats my opinion.

  • Buddy said

I have something to add to this.

I’ve been reading up on it alot and as far as I can see, both Hulk and The Wasp are going to be part of The Avengers, along with Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and Ant-Man.

I think those’ll be your 6 Avengers. And Nick Fury will be the one to assemble them, something like that.

I just think there are way cooler Avengers characters than Ant-Man. I can’t believe that guy’s getting his own movie.

I gotta say one thing to you all, check out the Comics The Ultimates, Vol 1, 2 and 3 is currently in print. This will give you a wide scope of the new era of avengers, i would assume the team would come from those comics since they based Nick Fury off of Samuel L. Jackson in those comics. It will give you a FANTASTIC sneak peek, you must read these comics.

    The Lineup:

    Cap. America
    Iron Man
    Ant Man
    Wasp
    Thor
    Hulk
    Quicksilver
    Scarlet Witch
    Hawkeye
    Black Widow
    (some previews into Vision)

They might even have some fun and throw the disbanded Wolverine in there

  • Silver Shadow said

The Perfect Line-up is Capn’ America,Iron Man,Thor,Black Panther,Black Widow,Scarlet Witch,Ms.Marvel,Wasp & Giant Man(small roles)Vision,Hawkeye & The Hulk(small role). Thats it! with maybe very short cameos of other characters such as Spider-Woman.

  • corona91719 said

The vision is a must! This is one of the baddest Marvel characters around.

  • Aaron J Drake said

Only way I see The Hulk being a villain in The Avengers. Cause as I recall in the comics he was already transformed and was fighting something else at the time when they approached him.

  • jason said

I agree with the earlier comment about using the Ultimates books as test scripts, Especially the early story about the hulk breaking out and the avengers hauling him back in.
The dialogue in those books is so solid that converting the books to script form wouldn’t be too hard.
    Just a thought.

    Spider Woman
    Luke Cage

Have you all forgotten about Simon- “Wonder Man”? Or what about Justice? He was an original. Well i just watched “The Incredible Hulk” movie and he will definitely be on the team, yeah, they put Downey Jr. in the end assembling the team!! Great, right? Not too sure tho on who will be the villian, or villians, but I do hope the movie isn’t goin to be a flop. The Avengers was a good comic and they need to make the movie the same.

I hope they start with the originals. Ant-man, Wasp, Thor, Hulk, Iron-man, and Captain America. Going with this gives them the chance to show Hulk quitting and leaves room for sequels. From an entertainment side I’d prefer “The New Avengers” roster, but since Iron-Man came out the movies have gotten better (from a “true-to-the-original” standpoint), so they should stick to the comics.

Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man, Wasp, Captain America, and the Hulk when they establish he can talk, if we go with originals. If we want to add some new Avengers: Vision, Scarlet Witch, Ms Marvel (after she lost her powers to Rogue since the X-Men movie screwed up a great X-Men Avengers crossover by showing how Rogue stole Carol’s powers), SpiderMan, and lets not forget RAGE!

Thor - Aaron Eckhart as Donald Blake, HHH as Thor

Well first I must say: Us comics fans are looking a gift horse in the mouth. Finally Hollywood seems to get it. We just hope they get it right.
Not everyone will be pleased 100 percent; but can they please stop catering to Newbies who think the Marvel Universe began on their birthday?
First of all I love the supposed line-up for the slated Avengers film. Thor- Haters be damned. Keep in mind Marvel is only making announcements about characters who will have their own feature film. Nothing would stop them from introducing Hawkeye as a friend of Stark in the movie itself.
Now I saw earlier mention of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Any REAL Avengers fan sees their importance. Still, they could be introduced elsewhere. There is still talk of the Magnto movie. Those two crazy lil mutant siblings (who happen to be Magneto’s grandkids) were first part of the Brotherhood. Uh huh, that Brotherhood… you know the one of Evil Mutants. Introduce them in that film then cross them over for the second Avengers film. Then we’d start seeing a film Universe that can go head-to-head with the true Marvel Universe.

  • Stevedore said

Retraction: Oops. Pietro and Wanda are Magneto’s children, not grandchildren. My mistake. I knew that, but damn, Ian McKellen is getting up there in years. Hope they make the movies soon. love you, Ian.

  • Estevan said

Spider-man will be a good tie in and wolverine will probably be in the picture but beast would be good and i agree with the iron man suit but it will need an orginal look

  • Evan Haag said

There’s no way to get either a tie-in with any of the existing X-Men movies. The rights to those characters are still owned by Fox, and not by Marvel Studios. Likewise, Spider-Man is owned by Sony Pictures, and can’t crossover either.

That doesn’t mean they can’t create a new backstory for Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch that DOESN’T involve Magneto. Heck, in the comic, they didn’t know he was their father for years, almost 100 issues of the Avengers. They thought they were just gypsies at first, and THEN were lied to and told that they were the children of the Golden Age Whizzer and Miss America. Which would be an interesting tie-in to Captain America’s origin, if you think about it.

  • vbasic said

OK. I’m going to be the grinch in this wish list. I say keep the Avengers simple. Too many and they just get in the way. Any comics book fan remember the battle between the Hulk VS. Thing in Fantastic Four #25 in 1964. It was one of the best battle issues ever done as Ben Grimm had to fight an enraged Hulk in NYC by himself. Then came Fantastic Four #26, the conclusion, called “The Avengers Take over” where a wounded Thing gets help from the Avengers. And guess what? As in real life, they get in each others way. The battle is disappointing and no resolution occurs as Banner changes back and slips away. So my Avengers list would be smaller. Iron man. Cap America. Nick Fury and Giant-Man (not Hank as Ant-man) and finally that’s it. No Thor, as Thor really doesn’t fit in with Modern Marvel framework, since he’s a Nordic god and has Mythological powers and not based on science as the other heroes are.

  • ali said

    it should be, captain america,iron man,spiderman,thor,nick fury,hulk,hawkeye,moon knight,Iceman,ghost rider,and wolverine

  • Chris said

From the way Tony STark spoke to General Ross, I think the movie will be “The Avengers VS. The Hulk”

  • AVENGERS said

Spiderman was in the Avengers @ some point i’m pretty sure

  • Toby said

Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp. The incredible Hulk should be there. But, of course, he just doesn’t fit in.
The Hulk and Submariner could go head to head with the Avengers. And possibly with Loki too.

  • Y'cien Henderson said

I totally agree, i am a huge marvel fan and was waiting for a time where the avengers would have its own movie. When i think of it i can see captain america cause of course you cant have avengers with out him thor, hawk eye, vision, black panther ,quicksilver would be great including his sister scarlet witch, iron man and of course the females like spider girl or ms. marvel or something. having the incredible hulk would be dynamic but because of his personality strenghth and everything that might not be good to fit in but hey there still she hulk. And im almost certain that by having ultron as the leading enemy would be just great like how can it get any better.

  • Y'cien Henderson said

i agree vbasic that thor probally shouldnt be in the movie pecause of his personality and stuff but as for his powers dont you think that his powers and style may be able to spark things up a little bit like think about it you have all these super heroes with unbelievable powers when people watch the wat the use it or show off that only make everything more the marrier dont you think, and i havnt thought about it but wolverine will probally be great in it as well
(plus hes one of my top marvel heroes anyway)

  • 999 said

spiderman, wolverine, ghostrider and hulk shouldn’t be in the avengers movie, but in a fantastic four movie

  • Richard Turnbow said

    Nice write up.
I totally agree with you. I also agree with others who say
“I just can’t understand how the ‘ANT MAN’ could get his own movie?” I mean, bigger characters like The Punisher, Cat Woman, etc., and they’ve bombed!! ANT MAN???!
Anyway, I definitely agree with the NAMOR idea, introducing him and then pitching his movie.
And I agree, how do you channel the awesome might of someone like the HULK into a team effort?
Also agree with having more chicks, but I always thought that the little wasp chick sucked. Too little and too insignificant. 1st an ant, then a wasp? What next, The Catepillar? Or maybe Roachman? And would that lead to a crossover with the X-Men where the Toad drops in and eats all of them? ha ha
Love the idea of a tie-in with Ms.Marvel and Rogue. DO IT!!
Also, I always wondered as a kid how & why THOR - the GOD, would want to team up?? And, again, all that power!! Whoever the Avengers are going to be fighting better be big and powerful, cus HULK, THOR, IRON MAN, and a Witch?? That’s already game over!!!

Last question: Will The FANTASTIC 4 make a cameo in The AVENGERS movie ??

  • Richard Turnbow said

P.S - Or maybe you could have Namor and Thor on the team for a minute, then have them leave because of some Global issue that makes Atlantis and Asgard call them back! Plus, remember THOR and the storyline that tied-in The New Mutants. Loved it!! A Classic!!!

I just hope they don’t get Don Cheadle to play Col. James RHODES. KEEP Terence Howard!! Let Don Cheadle (I love his acting, don’t get me wrong) be HAWKEYE!

    And Djimon as Black Panther.

  • dude said

i think captain america, iron man, thor, hulk, halkeye and wasp should be in the avengers movie you know there’s going to be a captain america movie too?

  • cbetrus said

i think the movie is set. Robert Downey teases at the end of both ironman and the incredible hulk about a super hero group. Will be sick. Line up should by capt. America, Ironman, Wolverine (if 20th permits), Spidey (Sony),Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Quicksilver, Ant-Man, Wasp, and others if permits…. this film could be amazing but who will be the hero they will all need to team up to defeat?

  • cbetrus said

    *villian to defeat?

    Hawkeye

Wonder-Man and The Vision - since they share the same brain wave paterns could be some good stuff there

Captain Marvel (though never a full member)

Two heroes I would like to see in it besides Hulk/Iron Man and Spiderman are Batman and Superman(Christian Bale) and the other I can’t rembember from Superman Returns…Maybe it would work out without those two, but if the do decide to make a superhero movie, batman and superman needs to be in it…..

the original avengers (on which this movie will probably be based off of).. should not have all these random characters in it the only characters who should be in it are as follows
Colonel America (those who actually read the comics know why i say that)
    Thor
    Ant-man
    Wasp
    Iron man
    Hulk

but i’ve always said it would be nice if they threw wolverine in there just for fun.. but then i’ve seen the emphasis on wolverine in the x-men movies now he’s the first to get his own movie from the x-men.. seems kinda stupid doesn’t it
but yeah they should use the ORIGINAL avengers.. and if its called Captain Amercia: The First Avenger seems kinda fitting to put ONLY the original avengers in it.. and yes natalia romanov would be in it.. if only an ally if you’ll remember she was first an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D and… who started the avengers? Nick Fury.. so yeah black widow would just have to be in it
