I don’t exactly know why this is necessary, but 100,000 dudes on YouTube apparently disagree. MEAN Magazine did a photoshoot with Kate Beckinsale “in homage” to Anna, the 1967 musical starring Anna Karina and featuring songs by Serge Gainsbourg, over which I marveled a couple of months back. In the above video, footage of Beckinsale on set is woven into Anna’s iconic dance number, “Rollergirl”, in which Karina’s nerdy cartoonist literally lets her hair down and sings about her fantasy life.
Though Beckinsale actually copies a few poses directly from the original scene, her interpretation couldn’t be more different in tone. It’s all Bardot hair, thick eyeliner and studied hyper-sexiness, with barely a nod to Karina’s goofy-geeky abandon. Not be one of those assholes who’s all, “old is better than new!” but, um…old is better than new!

It’s just…weird. Anna Karina of that era is pretty much the sexiest creature one could imagine- partly because her intellect was layered and quirky and mysterious. Kate Beckinsale? Meh.
I’m tired of these modern starlets imitating icons for different eras. It’s just a lame attempt on the starlet’s part, as well as her publicist, to import some credibility. “Hey, look at me! I’m just like Marilyn Monroe, which means I must BE the new Marilyn Monroe!” You see it in so many magazine photo shoots, and it’s lame in so many ways. Just because you make yourself up to be an actual star doesn’t mean you have the same star-quality. And Jessica Alba– dressing up as Charlie Chaplin doesn’t make you funny. It just makes you into a Halloween costume.
Anna Karina is sexy to me because, seemingly, she lacked self-consciousness as an actress, at least in her youth. But Beckinsale in this clip just seems to ‘acting’ sexy instead of being sexy, and it’s not really alluring. It’s like comparing real crab to imitation crab.
And heaven forbid Hollywood if they were ever to come up with something new and original!
Wow. Here I was thinking my day couldn’t get any worse. Thanks.

oh please. i think i wish i had your life.
Up till now i had only seen Anna Karina’s beautiful young face in black and white,in “Alphaville” ,so this is a real treat.
Kate Beckinsdale is undeniably gorgeous, but just looks daft here,it’s not fair to compare them..Like Sienna Miller as Edie Segdewick!!
Ouch! That’s all that can be said for that.
