Although not as major a response as other films, The Golden Compass received quite a bit of publicity with Bill Donahue blasting its anti-Catholicism. Sadly, he and other Catholics weren't nearly as offended by the documentary "Deliver Us From Evil," which focused on a Catholic priest who raped hundreds of children and which the church conspired to cover up and help escape justice.

There's now a whole slew ... of horror films dealing with the occult, Satanism and the Antichrist, but this was the hit that pretty much started it all.

Val Lewton's The Seventh Victim predates Rosemary's Baby by a couple of decades in terms of the basic plot points. I don't recall hearing that it was particularly controversial, though, but perhaps those were more civilized times. (Truth be told, as far as I can tell, the one that "started it all" is "Young Goodman Brown," by Nathaniel Hawthorne.)

And there were plenty of pre-Code and silent features that ran afoul of the bluenoses. Didn't Griffith's Intolerance offend every one that wasn't offended by Birth of a Nation?

An interesting footnote to The Devils: While it may have been banned in Italy, it inspired the prolific "nunsploitation" subgenre of the 70s, perpetrated mainly by Italian directors like Lucio Fulci and Bruno Mattei.

You missed a very recent one: The Golden Compass. Not all of them are adult-oriented. The Harry Potter movies might included as well. How many groups were offended on religious grounds for those two?

MICHAEL J. SCHMITZ:

"England" is a country, not a religion. And the English-language bible dates back to at least the 14th-Century Tyndale Bible; long before the Church of England existed. And it was, of course, just a translation of the Catholic Vulgate Bible....

I think the prequel of sequel to The Davinci Code was banned from filming in certain places because of offended religious leaders.

You missed Jesus Christ Superstar (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070239/). My father told me groups of protesters were standing outside the cinema when he went to see it. I guess making Jesus more human is not done. Love some of the songs in that movie!

WHAT OFFENDS RELIGIONS OTHER THAN ENGLAND, IS THAT ALL BIBLES WERE ORIGINALLY COPIED FROM THEIRS-( IT WAS THE FIRST ORIGINALLY WRITTEN TO STOP THE BLOODSHED SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO.) THE ONES THAT COPIED FROM IT EACH CHANGED IT TO BE PERSONAL. EACH TIME A NEW BIBLE IS WRITTEN, THEY CHANGED AGAIN. MOST ARE LIES AND THEY KNOW IT. IT BRINGS IN THE TAX FREE DOLLAR.

I'm pretty sure Zeitgeist pissed them off too seeing as how it basically debunks religion.

"Christianity, along with all other theistic belief systems ... empowers those who know the truth, but use the myth to manipulate and control societies. The religious myth is the most powerful device ever created, and serves as the psychological soil upon which other myths can flourish."

Great list. Peter Greenaway's "The Baby of Macon" might be another to mention--banned in most places for a multitude of "sins."

"Fitna" was also very polemical in Europe as well as across the Islamic world. However, I don't know if it ever got the internet debut that Geert Wilders intended it to have due to a feared back lash from Muslims.
