I don't know where to begin. First of all, the effect in the Gap ad (which premiered a year before The Matrix, re-popularizing khakis and contributing to the short reign of swing music in the spring of 1998) and in Wing Commander is a completely different and much simpler effect than the one used in The Matrix. That particular effect was popularized in the Rolling Stones' video for their cover of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". The video made its debut in 1996 on MadTV.

Also, you not only seem to misunderstand the meaning of the word "spoof", but you completely missed the first movie to ACTUALLY spoof those sequences from The Matrix. That movie was Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo.

That you didn't bother to do even a basic fact-check before you posted this ridiculous article speaks volumes about your work ethic and your integrity. You should probably kill yourself if you think this half-assed, tossed off garbage is worthy of public consumption. I sincerely hope you didn't get paid for this.

I was blown away by the effect in the GAP ads - but they did come out well before the Matrix. Kinda spoiled it for me since it had already been done a few times in commercials before the Matrix came out. It's a neat effect though and perfected in the Matrix - that's for sure.

What about "Without a Paddle"! I love that flick, and Seth Green does a matrix bend and even mentions the title!

Dude, you should reeeeeeallly do your research.

Like someone said above, Wing Commander came out well before The Matrix. Not only that, but the sequence that you refer to ISN'T A BULLET-TIME SEQUENCE. It's a moment before they jump into hyperspace. Which is actually a more commonly ripped sequence than Bullet-time.

The Gap adds also aren't from the Matrix. Not only do they not look like bullet-time... but the adds came out a full year before The Matrix.
And Wanted isn't a Matrix clone, it's based on a creator owned comic. The slowing down of the bullets, I suppose could be viewed as bullet-time, but the reason it's in the movie is to show how the bullet twists, not just to do it.

I'm guessing Ultraviolet was as bad as it looked. I was selling DVDs at the time, and me (and my coworkers) were amazed by the fact that Ultraviolet and Aeon Flux came out almost simultaneously and appeared to be exactly the same film.

Point 1: Yes, if only the clips were all on the web.

Point 2: You're right. It came out a mere two weeks earlier. Damn.

This list could easily be a top 20 or top 50. But Wing Commander actually came out before The Matrix for what it's worth.
