The first ever Summit Pictures Comic-Con panel, which was met with snores up until the Twilight segment began, and then really began amidst continuous Beatlemania-like screaming from fangirls. Oh, and we learned a few new things about Alex Proyas’ Knowing and Paul McGuigan’s Push.

Highlights:

  • The Twilight actors are really into themselves.
  • Robert Pattinson is one of the most wanted guys in the world.
  • Robert Pattinson’s band might be providing a tune to the Twilight soundtrack.
  • Nic Cage is in another movie about a foreseen disaster (Knowing).
  • Alex Proyas is not directing The Silver Surfer.
  • Dakota Fanning was the surprise guest (really she was just late), and she’s all grown up.

Read the liveblogging transcript after the jump.

3:02 - Here’s a surprise guest…. ending everything….

Dakota Fanning….she finally made it through traffic. She’s all grown up, looking even older than she did in the Push clip. They grow up so fast these days! *sniffle*

And… we’re out.

2:59 - I think everyone has screamed themselves out, and they’re winding down. I picture a lot of sore throats and hoarse voices throughout the rest of the con.

2:50 - TWILIGHT Q&A, the screaming continues:

Okay, some young Asian girl, maybe 16 years old got up and said “Hey Robert, how does it feel to be one of the most wanted guys in the world? Because I WANT YOU BABY! YEAHHHHHHH!”

And the crowd goes wild.

Catherine said “You fans out there who came and camped outside the set? That really helped encourage us.”

EEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The next question was literally, “Do you guys on the cast wear boxers, briefs, or freeball it?”

The crowd, once again, goes nuts.

2:39 - TWILIGHT panel revelations:

They have a special surprise…. apparently Rob is in a band and will “maybe” be providing one of the songs for the movie. Boy, talk about lamest surprise ever. These people need a lesson in making surprises.

According to director Catherine, apparently during one love scene, “Rob got a little excited and fell onto the floor!” The crowd goes absolutely nuts for this.

They’re asking all the actors what attracted them to the role, and everyone says “The books were incredible” oops, sorry Kristen Stewart, take a step back.

An aside note here: Cam Gigandet has to be one of the most “into himself” actors ever. The guy can’t stop checking himself out on the big screens, and trying to be coy and cute.

He’s like an entire season of Dawson’s Creek rolled up into one person.

2:36 - TWILIGHT Q&A, question #2:

Next question: “What’s it like playing super hot vampires?”

Answer was provided by the audience, “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”

2:35 - TWILIGHT Q&A, question #1:

Kristen Stewart plays the girl in the clip, and she was asked how she got involved, and there was literally a deer in the headlights moment. She panicked.

“Well, I must have been living under some huge boulder because I hadn’t heard about this until Catherine approached me with it. I have odd tastes, I don’t live in that world. Hee hee. Hee hee. Hee hee.” My friend Sarah said, “Wow, maybe she shouldn’t have done so much coke before she came out on stage.”

2:33 - TWILIGHT clip:

Here’s what I’ve gleaned, not being a Twilight reader….girl gets lured into a big mirrored room, sees videos of herself as a child in ballet lessons. Evil vampire appears, tortures her, video tapes it, then ka-bam, her vampire boyfriend shows up. They have a massive fight which ends up with her getting bit on the arm. Does she get turned? I guess you’ll have to watch the movie to find out. If you can stand the screams.

It looks a bit like a TV movie… and seems pretty reminiscent of Spike vs. Angel from the Buffy days, which probably reveals a little of my Whedon-esque geekery.

2:26 - TWILIGHT panel finally really starts amidst the screaming:

They’re trotting everyone out on stage one by one, and people are killing their vocal cords and destroying any chance of being a singer down the line.

The panel includes director Catherine Hardwicke, author Stephenie Meyer, and the cast — Robert Pattinson (Edward), Kristen Stewart (Bella), Cam Gigandet (James), Rachelle LaFevre (Victoria), Edi Gathegi (Laurant), and Taylor Lautner (Jacob).

Eric Morrow is fighting a losing battle against the screamers.

It’s devolved into the cast / director saying one or two words, and then people start screaming.

It’s going something like this, “So Taylor… tell us” EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Taylor: “Well, my character…” EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Another cast member “What’s interesting is… ” EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

There’s a hell of a lot of vamping (sorry, bad pun) going on, and these actors are pretty sure of themselves. “We just look good!” says Cam.

Now, it’s clip time, and everyone is flipping out.

2:18 - TWILIGHT panel:

Next up: Twilight.

People are going literally nuts. It’s like a Beatles concert.

The logo for Twilight just popped on screen, and I think someone behind me wet their pants. I only wish I was kidding.

People are now chanting “Twilight! Twilight” and I’m fearing for personal safety.

They’re urging people to stay seated during the panel. I’m eyeing a nearby exit.

They can’t even introduce the panel because people are SCREAMING at the top of their lungs.

Screaming. Like, they were on fire.

2:16 - KNOWING Q&A, Question #2:

The next question was “I heard you were attached to The Silver Surfer, are you doing that?” Proyas: “No, unfortunately that’s just a rumor. Although, I do like the Silver Surfer.”

People are starting to get antsy for Twilight…. it’s a restless bunch of vampire freaks in here

2:13 - KNOWING Q&A, Question #1:

Now Eric Morrow is “interviewing” Alex on stage, and literally every single person around me has tuned out. There are five different conversations going on, people are reading, one guy is sleeping. Welcome to Comic-Con!

The first question is from a guy who literally jumped up and shouted “COMIC-CON RULES!” Wow. He wanted to know what it was like working with Nic Cage.

Alex, of course, said it was “a real pleasure, he really was a delightful person.” He also went on to describe Cage as “a huge comic book geek.”

Proyas is putting people to sleep again with a discussion about the code in the movie with the number “well, I can’t tell you anything about that really”.

2:09 - KNOWING clip:

Now they’re showing us a clip from the flick, it’s high school recess back in the 1950s, and a small girl named Lucinda is a bit… off.

Her class is told to draw pictures of the future, and they’ll get locked into a time capsule. Lucinda just writes down a ton of numbers…. and it gets locked away.

Nic Cage’s son gets the envelope with her numbers in it when they crack that sucker open, and strange stuff starts happening.

It turns out the page of digits contains dates of all the major disasters that have happened on the planet for the past 50 years, and it also predicts an event that’ll kill 81 people in the next few days.

Of course, no one believes poor Nic Cage, and he finds himself in the middle of a plane crash that slams into a traffic jam on a bridge. Killing 81 people.

CUE SPOOKY MUSIC.

So, he sets off on a quest to figure out what to do with the numbers… and the clip ends.

2:05 - KNOWING Panel

The giant hook came onstage to yank everyone off, and now they’re introducing Alex Proyas, “director of such movies like The Crow, Dark City, and more…”

Alex quipped, “I’m sorry I don’t have any beautiful actors here to sit next to me” to which a woman on the front row shouted “YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL!”

He was visibly flushed.

The story: Nic Cage discovers a list of numbers that appear to predict disasters in the future, and he has to figure out what to do with this information.

2:00 - PUSH Q&A Question #2:

Now a fan wants to know if Chris likes playing “human” characters or roles that let him be someone other than himself. He answered, “Well, I love tapping into my inner child… but I love it all! I mean, I didn’t go to college.” - huge cheer here — “so I’m just really enjoying it all!”

According to Evans he took the role because he loved the script so much, “It’s full of twists and turns and I signed on before I knew anyone else was involved.”

Djimon Hounsou took the role because he loved how dark his character was and the abilities he has. Based on the clips, he’s trying to muscle out Sam Jackson as “resident badass.”

Paul is now droning on about the appeal of science fiction and espionage and comic book heroes and powers and everyone around me has fallen into a coma.

He did say that they use Hong Kong as a “character in the movie”, as the film is set there.

1:53 - PUSH Q&A Question #1:

The first question is: “Do those screams affects the psychics? We saw them killing the fish, but does it have any effect on people with powers?”

Paul McGuigan explained that it’s just an ability that interferes with hearing, and throws people off. It doesn’t damage the psychics.

He’s now explaining the other kinds of powers… “Sniffers” can touch items and “see the history” of them, like a glass in a bar.

Shifters can change the shape of things for a short amount of time. A person who’s a “Stitch” can heal you, and “Wipers” can erase your minds.

1:45 - PUSH clip

In the clip, Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans share some noodles in a Japanese restaurant, and this is the first time I’ve had a chance to see that….not a child, not a teenager Dakota Fanning. And it’s bizarre.

She’s a “Watcher” who can read people’s minds and see into the near future, and she’s trying to get Nick to help her rescue Camilla. When she has her flashes, it’s like watching a strange student film shot on 16mm, and replete with jumpcuts.

They get into a bit of a scrape, and Chris uses his powers to slam people into the wall… and then this crazy eyed guy with an uber-powerful banshee wail starts screaming at them, shattering fish tanks and obliterating everything in their path. And they scream over, and over, and over. It looks really creepy (they even obliterate fish with their wails) and it is incredibly ear-piercing. And annoying.

Chris Evans explains that his character is a bit of an outsider, and he only uses his powers for personal gain. He plays dice for money, and uses his ability to tweak the rolls so he wins. But he’s also laying low and living under the wire, so he’s not exactly a billionaire.

1:35 - Just seated, and they’re showing us a preview of PUSH.

Eric Morrow from IGN came out to introduce the first ever Summit Pictures Comic-Con panel, which includes “a little phenomenon you may have heard of called TWILIGHT.” Literally every female in the room screamed at the top of their lungs.

The trailer features an apocalyptic voice narrating how tough things are in a world where people can move things with their minds…and a lot of images that say “Getty Images” on them. They must have slapped this together last night.

Now the team from PUSH has taken the stage: Djimon Hounsou, Chris Evans, Camilla Belle, and director Paul McGuigan.

Dakota Fanning is sadly (or happily?) not present.

Paul wanted to make this movie because it’s “set in the real world, but lets us play in the fantasy world.”

Djimon Hounsou plays Henry Carver, a government agent who is in charge of recruiting people with psychic powers, and he also has the power to “alter people’s minds.” He can also tweak their powers and “make them better soldiers.”

Now they’re showing a clip of how his mental prowess actually works.

It looks like he’s gifted with the power of extreme persuasion, and when he uses it, his eyes turn black. He commands a footsoldier let him down to shoot himself in the mouth. Ouch. So basically he’s like an evil Jedi government agent? Spooky.

He can also “Push” memories onto people, as can Camilla Belle’s character, which can come in handy. McGuigan said, “You can go up to someone and be like ‘Hey, you owe me a hundred bucks, remember?’” Now that would come in very handy.

Chris Evans plays “Nick… a mover” and the crowd goes nuts before he gets any further. “Yeah! I move stuff! All right!” Basically by “mover” he means he moves things with his mind, and he’s gone into hiding.

They’re setting up a new clip to show off the Chris Evans and Camilla Belle’s powers, and then the Q&A opens up, with millions of Chris Evans fans already lining up.

Dude, you have no idea what you have just done. As you can tell from ComicCon, we Twilight fans are a little…passionate. And any negative comments about the book or the movie will be taken *very* seriously. This isn’t a threat, just more of a warning. Get ready to hear A LOT of mean comments soon. Good Luck, and remember, you pulled the trigger.

Well, I was there too… and it’s true. The noise level was flattering… but a little out of control. I’m a Twilight fan, and was in Hall H since it opened this morning to make sure I got a good seat, and the women didn’t scream even half as much for Keanu or Marky Mark. So, maybe RPatz is the new “wanted” man. I was proud of the Twilight representation. I hope the movie does well so we can see the rest. Also, for anyone going to the Con, this year everything is working on a “voucher” or “lottery” system for any autographs and handouts. I think it sucks, but that just means you don’t have to be first in line… just in the first 50 or so. Have fun!

I really liked your commentary. I wish I could have been there. But HELL I don’t even live in America!! But seriously I wish you would cut it out with the negativity! I LOVE The Twilight Series and I DO NOT appreciate the not so nice remarks you made. First of all I think someone mentioned that we, TWILIGHTERS, are a very passionate bunch and we can not stand ANYBODY insulting the books/movie. This isn’t a threat. More like a…YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOKS!! Because trust me TWILIGHT is a huge thing and you won’t understand what is going inside the heads of Twilighters until you read the books. So please don’t judge us or the books/movie if you don’t want to be judged yourself. (:

No need to be such a jerk about Twilight. Try reading it; your dopey comments might have some weight if you knew what you were talking about.

  • Aleash said

You have not read the Teilight Saga, as you yourself said. So why do you pass these judgements on the Twilight movie? The questions about looks come from the fact that vampires in the Twilight verse are decribed as inhumanly gorgeous. The surprise is huge if you know that Edward in the book often composes piano pieces. The biggest thing he has written is Bella’s Lullaby because is something very sweet and is used constantly through out the series. It is also used in a major scene in Twilight. So how awesome and sweet would it be if the actor playing Edward actually wrote the lullaby? Krisent’s deer in headlight moment? Think about it: 6,500 die-had Twilight fans, and the fact that she knows the reation that they have about everything that has ever been said envolving the movie. Coke? Pa-lease, if you’ve seen/read the interviews, you’d know a little bit beter where she’s coming from. TV movie? Read the novels, and you’ll understand my dear. “We just look good!” comes from the vampires they are portraying and how their written. And you have to admit, the actor and actresses *are* good looking. *fangirl moment* The fans can be a little over powering, so a non-fan *would* fear for their safety. (Don’t let them know you haven’t read the Twilight Saga. Oh how they’ll hound you to get you to read the it.) ;)

  • Hannah said

i laughed so hard i could hardly breathe during this entire commentary. the fans are definately passionate, but the books are good enough to make that many passionate fans. you said you hadnt read them yet, and hopefully the reaction will make you want to get the books. they are definately worth reading.
