The holiday video game season is already fast upon us, and over the next few weeks several highly anticipated video games will finally be hitting store shelves. However, none of them has a big-budget (or even indie-sized budget… that would be a fun experiment) film adaptation hitting the theater concurrently, which is probably a good thing, because we’d end up with a lot of half-assed video games.

But which new games should be turned into movies? Thankfully, imagination has finally been creeping back into games, and it’s high time Hollywood pays attention (although, of course, the guys blasting aliens with guns will still be there.) Here’s a list of video games that should be turned into movies.

LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet

Sony’s cute-as-a-button game has been touted across the nation with enormous billboard featuring a representation of the main character, Sackboy, along with the phrase “Fun Will Overcome.” While the gameplay is open-ended and the emphasis is on creating your own levels to share with friends online, you can’t ignoring the compelling adorability of Sackboy. He’s mute, cute, and would be the perfect star of a Miyazaki-esque film, following him as he explores his noew world and meets new friends. British comedian Stephen Fry narrates the game beautifully, so when you play it you already feel like you’re part of a movie… or a documentary about a newly discovered race of tiny, animated stuffed animals.

Dead Space

Dead Space

Electronic Arts released this “horror in space” game last week, and it’s one of the most frightening games I’ve played in a long while. Resident Evil may have cornered the market on scary zombies, but imagine mutant zombie aliens in zero gravity, and that’s a bit like this game. You play engineer Isaac Clarke, sent to repair an ailing mining ship in a remote part of the galaxy. However, there’s a reason the ship isn’t responding to calls and is listing in space. Although not a combat soldier, your engineering suit is fairly robust and you can pick up helpful tools along the way to keep you alive. The plot combines elements of Alien and is reminiscent of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, but it’s also gorgeous and scary at the same time.

Braid

Braid

Jonathan Blow’s Braid is an extremely touching and emotional story about a man named Tim who is searching for a princess. Evidently Tim and the princess had some sort of problem in the past, and Tim wants to change things so badly that he can now turn back time. During his search, he can use this ability to aid himself as he travels from world to world, ostensibly learning lessons about forgiveness along the way. It has a simple artistic style that manages to be charming and emotional at the same time, and the moody ambient soundtrack helps as well. A man who loves a woman so much that he can channel that energy and turn back the clock? Sounds like a movie to me. Think The Fountain meets Back to the Future. It also has the dubious distinction of having an extremely bizarre video review from rapster Soulja Boy.

Gears of War

Gears of War

The highly anticipated sequel to Gears of War comes out on November 7th, and it’s a fairly straightforward story of humans vs. aliens. Although in this case, the aliens are called the Locust Horde and are loosely based on insects, if insects were eight feet tall and wanted to kill you. You play through the game as Marcus Fenix, a soldier with a dark past who is freed from military prison in the opening scenes of the game. As the Locust attack, Fenix is grudgingly reinstated and throughout the game the other soldiers who meet him are either impressed or revolted. The upcoming sequel takes things further as Marcus and his soldiers begin drilling through the planet so they can take the fight to the Locusts. In March 2007 it was announced that a Gears of War movie was in development, and this summer they named Len Wiseman (two Underworld movies and Die Hard 4). Currently it’s in the early stages of development, and is expected to be released in 2010.

Portal

Portal

This is a perfect example of a simple game that really opens up in scope when you apply a rich story to it. You play Chell, a human experiment subject at Aperture Science. Although there is a suspicious absence of other humans at the facility, you are guided through the levels by GLaDOS, an artificial intelligence who promises you cake and other rewards. However, she begins turning malevolent and the game takes a turn for survival. Luckily you’re armed with the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, or Portal Gun, that can open up wormholes to let you teleport around obstacles. The entire game is set in the austere bowels of the Aperture laboratories, and is a bit like THX-1138 if HAL-9000 were running things. The Jonathan Coulton song that plays over the end credits will stay in your head for days.

The Pip-Boy 3000 from Fallout 3

Fallout 3

The third installment of this post-nuclear apocalypse survival game comes out next Tuesday, although this game is so graphically different from the first two that it might as well be an entirely new game. In their alternative timeline, World War III happened, but in the 1950s. As a result, the look and feel of the game is stuck in retro-vintage, complete with campy humor and advertising. You play the a young vaultdweller in search of your father, voiced by Liam Neeson, and set out from the safety of your nuclear fallout shelter in search of him. Along the way you’ll encounter plenty of survivors, learn how to upgrade your skills and keep radiation at bay, and listen to charming fireside chats from the President, provided by the dulcet tones of Malcolm McDowell. Thankfully you have your wrist-mounted Pip-Boy 3000 computer to help you through the tough times.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

We’ve previously mentioned this Lucasarts game set in the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope (or the last prequel, and the original Star Wars movie for those of you less fluent with Star Wars geekery), but it holds up on its own as far superior all three of Lucas’ prequels. Darth Vader pulls some Machiavellian schemes in this game as he secretly plots against the Emperor, employs a secret apprentice, and begins to form the basis for the Rebellion. Lucas also announced this week that a brand new massively multiplayer online game called Star Wars: The Old Republic is being developed by their company and BioWare, and is set some 3,500 year before the events in Star Wars. It’s ironic that the Star Wars games are much better than the recent films, animated or otherwise.

Mirror's Edge

Mirror’s Edge

You play a courier named Faith who carries sensitive information from point to point in a dystopic future that has begun distrusting electronic communication. She used by people who want to transmit messages and avoid detection by the government. Although that doesn’t stop the government from wanting that information. Faith doesn’t come equipped with guns, although she can briefly use one if she disarms an enemy. Instead the gameplay is focused on running, leaping, sliding, gapping, and uses the concept/sport of parkour to get from one place to another. Just reading about the game will make you remember how bad Johnny Mnemonic was, where Keanu Reeves played a courier who stored data in his brain. It’s refreshingly to have a character who doesn’t tote around 38 different kinds of guns, which emphasizes non-violent gameplay. Let’s hope it doesn’t lead to a rash of kids hurling themselves off of buildings in an effort to imitate their newfound runner-courier idol.

You nailed it- Gears should be a movie. I’d love to see Del Toro direct it (while shunning actors like The Rock to play the parts).

  • Exab said

There IS a Dead Space movie, it’s a prequel 2D animation movie called Dead Space: Downfall

  • Jay said

    What the fuck?

This is probably the WORST FUCKING ARTICLE EVER. Christ, I’m normally pretty nice about this kind of thing, but damn. This list looks like it was written from some dumbshit kid who doesn’t know anything about cinema or gaming.

It’s like you took the most popular games from the last 10 minutes and put them on here. Get a fucking clue.

    BURIED ON DIGG.

  • Erik said

How the hell did this list not include Halo, and The Legend of Zelda series?

  • Colin said

Gears of War, Dead Space, and Force Unleashed are already very cinematic experiences. Making them into a movie seems redundant. Mirror’s Edge seems like it’s going to be the same way, but it’s still too early to tell. Braid the Movie was called Run Lola Run, and is vastly overrated. Portal is solely a cerebral experience, and a puzzle at its heart. Because of the lack of characterization, it feels like you are actually trapped in this nightmarish laboratory, and that you have to escape - not Mario, not Mega Man, not Link. You. If Portal was a movie, it would entirely defeat the purpose, and it is not at all meant for that medium. Fallout 3 would be so many post-apocalyptic movies about a guy and a dog (The Mad Max series, A Boy and His Dog), it would just feel cheap. Plus, if it follows in Oblivion’s footsteps like we all know it will, the love for Fallout 3 will come from spending a hojillion billion hours exploring - not something you can do in a movie.

Way to just pick the hottest titles off the internet and talk about how awesome they are, and to say that, by being awesome, anything other than game sales is justified. If they were meant to be movies, they would be, and as such, they do not deserve movie deals. Just as this article’s pointless jabber that has nothing to do with the title does not deserve attention. Please Digg down.

I think you’re missing the point. These games may seem like they should be movies, but it’s only because they are such complete stories on their own. I can’t imagine how Portal, for example, could be made into a good movie without just showing an edited playthrough.

  • C.J. said

give me a damn break - Mirror’s edge isnt’ even released yet and you think it should be a movie? Good lord. Rainbow Six should be #1.

  • Dave said

    I highly disagree.
Most of these games have no linear storyline and so the movie’s storyline could be anything.
LBP would have a movie about how to create games (not very entertaining to watch)
The horror in Dead Space would be much harder to use in a movie
Can’t comment on Braid (still haven’t played it)
Gears of War is already getting a movie (and the company that is creating it is in talks with EPIC to buy them, or something like that)
Portal is a puzzle game and it wouldn’t really be entertaining (unless well done)
    Can’t comment on Fallout 3
The point of Star Wars: TFS was that it wouldn’t be a movie and you would get to play it They were trying to make it funner that way (but the game was crap but the storyline was great so I agree it _could_ be made into a good movie)
    :D
    /me is done

  • Mike said

ummm i have to say it… where is final fantasy vii on your list?

  • Neal said

Really? Talk about a biased opinion. Gears of War movie and Portal movie before a Halo movie? Someone doesn’t even KNOW the gaming franchise.

  • Joker961 said

Can’t believe Half-life didnt make the list. The original Half-life games, with its incredibly cinematic opening credits & riveting cut scenes, is virtually an interactive movie…

  • Monte said

I’ve always thought Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic should have been made into a movie as well. Great storyline - although for anyone who’s played the game the real plot twist is already blown.

  • Bobby said

I think this is a great list of games. Most of them I think can make a successful transition from console to screen. Havng said that I feel that zelda would be an ideal movie. Set it up with a darker tone and give it the asthetic of The Lord Of The Rings. Just a thought.

  • Tucker said

What a stupid list; 2 of these games aren’t released and another 3 don’t follow proper film narrative structure AT ALL. Dead Space, Gears, & Star Wars are the only reasonable ones.

  • Ed said

What?!? No Metal Gear Solid Movie eh? (or does that not count as new)

  • Jazzy said

    Gears of war…..YES!!!!

  • Jackson said

Haven’t you seen garbage like Max Payne, Doom or dare I say, Hitman? Good video game movies don’t exist and never will. Leave the greatness inside the video game; why do we need shameful, crappy renditions of movies that barely relate to their game counterparts anyway?

  • Dave said

Honourable mention SHOULD be Deus-Ex.. in fact that it was going into production.. they cancelled for no mentioned reason :(

  • Andrew Littler said

I think there is one or two decent movie-games on that list, the rest is fucking terrible

  • Gem said

You may want to reconsider Braid. Great game, but the story is not quite what you think it is if you only read game reviews. The “Princess,” is actually a giant metaphor for something quite….well, I won’t ruin it, but it’s “spontaneous.”

It could never really be a movie.

  • anon ymous said

wow…. you didn’t put half life in this list. gg, noob.

  • Solid Snake said

Metal Gear Solid should be turned into a movie.. part 4 was practically a movie in itself hahaha

  • carlos said

    everything but portal

  • Rick said

Good choices, I’d like to add a couple more. I think Half Life would be the better choice from the Valve catalog. I think Blizzard could make a good movie from the Warcraft universe. System Shock, or SS2, would be a creepy damn movie.

  • Steve said

I think good old LucasArts’ adventure games like Monkey Island series or Grim Fandango can make fine movies…nonetheless I can live with this list.

  • reebo said

Fallout 3? Please, ever play Fallout 1 buddy? Nah, it’s so “graphically different” nowadays, why bother though right?

  • mario said

wtf where the hell is halo on this, oh and 1st haha

  • loren said

your list is silly. portal would never work as a movie

here are 5 games that would do 1000% better at the box office:

    1. Metroid (who wouldn’t love seeing a hot actress take up the role of Samus as she fights her way through the ruins of an alien planet, or acts as a bounty hunter?)

    2. Metal Gear (this was a landmark game and it had movie quality storyline. so repeating that level of excellence in a movie - with amazing action and amazing story - is a sure win)

    3. World of Warcraft

This is a live action movie that is in production right now. It should be just as big if not bigger than lord of the rings.

    4. F-Zero (ok, so you’ve seen a lot of racing movies lately - death race, speed racer, etc, but this one will be different. It is set in the future, and the tracks are incredible - including jumps, giant loops, mine fields, etc. oh did I mention the tracks are 1000 feet in the air so if you go off the track, you die?

We can expect to see plenty of amazing graphics and explosions as well as seeing the unique cars in action. However forget about all of the above, because where F-Zero could really shine is having amazing characters - such as Captain Falcon. Each of the famous pilots will have their own reasons for entering the race. We will see their four individual storylines intertwine during the movie, as they fight both on and off the track.

    5. Final Fantasy

OK I know what you are all going to say - they did TWO final fantasy movies and both were kind of lame. But that is true of most movies at the box office - for every 10 movies that get released maybe only one or two that summer really do well at the box office.

I would like to see a FF movie that is set in an earlier period of the series (castles, chocobos, magic, etc).

runner ups: ninja gaiden, contra, mario

  • Rav said

    Half Life 2?

  • Andrew Ryan said

Dunno how you could’ve missed BioShock. Much more cinematic than any of these others with a deeper, more involving storyline. I bet there’s a bunch of A-List actors who’d love a part in this tapestry of human (inhuman?) pride and prejudice. The costumes and set pieces could be fantastic.

  • Phillip said

You couldn’t actually put some effort in choosing games rather than picking those that came out in the past 6 months? And portals?! This is in my top 8 of worst articles written. Your time would be better spent learning to feed yourself and wiping your ass because, obviously, your intelligence is on a level with those found at the zoo.

    Let’s hope it does.

Actually, Deadspace has an animated feature length movie that was planned to be released soon after the game.

It’s Deadspace: Downfall, and tells the back story of the crew of the Ishimura finding the artifact and their subsequent death and destruction.

As for a live action feature, I agree that Deadspace in the right hands could be a classic suspense/horror/sci-fi movie like Alien. More likely, though, it’d be a guns and gore summer blockbuster.

Also, Portal’s a nice choice, but take it one step further and bring the entire Half Life franchise stories in, Half Life, Opposing Force, HL2, and the episodic content.

  • Kyle said

With Doom and Max Payne failing in the box office, you would need to revert to far better games of the past. I know you are trying to keep the list full of newer titles, but the classics are the ones that need to be brought to life. Zelda, Kings Quest, Rainbow Six, Half-Life, Bioshock, ect.

  • Req said

Why should any of these be movies? This is a horrible list. There’s absolutely no explanation why LittleBigPlanet should be a movie. What the hell are you talking about Kevin Kelly?

No Ian, Gears should not be a movie. Neither should Portal.

    Horrible, horrible list.

good list, even though dead space has an animated movie out already nad 2 more is coming, but they are sort of an adition to the story i think. but dont know if it counts. but i think i would have added assasins creed, wich i think have an amizing and compelling story,

  • Brodie said

If you reduce the prevelence of the supernatural elements in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, make it a solid behind enemy lines/covert ops story, that would be a great flick. Simon Baker or Dominic West as Blaskowitz.

Also: Bio-Shock in two parts. First part explores the back story. Second part is the game.

  • ibad said

    bioshock too

  • Upriser385 said

List is mostly crap except force unleashed and fallout 3.I dont know why that guy did not include Mass Effect.
Perhaps he should write different kinds of articles.

  • Hiyho said

This is hands down the most retarded article i have ever read in my life, its like a kid thats never played any games in his life wrote it based on some shit list of new games.

  • BlueD said

Dude ur missing the whole point of making a game into a movie. Portal would not make a movie, granted its fun as hell to play but theres no way i woulda wanna sit there for 90 mins watching someone play portal, which is how the movie would be, however things like gears of war, which are filled with action and PEOPLE would make awsome movies. And serriously we dont need more star wars movies.

Also, just for your own intrest, if u havn’t already played Indego Prophecy, play it, that would make an amazing movie. Incredible story line with awsome characters who you remember forever.

    SOUL CALIBUR AND DARKSTALKERS MOVIES.

Namco is made Soul Calibur games so 2nd Degree Media made a website for Soul Calibur but nothing is happening but Sammo hung was set to direct but nothing happened, but I think there will be some European and Japanese film companies to make the movie version of Soul Calibur but the story has to be true to the game.
Capcom’s Darkstalkers could go into a big screen treatment but I think Threshold Entertainment of Mortal Kombat movies and Capcom should join together to work on Darkstalkers movies,TV and work on a new games.
i hope that Capcom,Christophe Gans and Samuel Hadida getting the script redone to that Onimusha to follow Onimusha Warlords.
