Twilight is poised to make a kazillion dollars this weekend, despite the fact that it contains mediocre acting and special effects that look like they were cutting edge back in 1977. That’s really a testament to the fans of the book series, which is dominating the teenage market. Just like Sex in the City surprised studio execs by bringing in hordes of middle-aged women and making that a hit, the teens will do the same for this moody vampire flick.
A lot of those teens are going to be of the male variety, hoping to get some insight into the mysterious creature that is a teenage girl. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times says, ” I am not now nor have I ever been a 13-year-old girl, but “Twilight” made me wish I could be.” Which if you’ve ever met Kenneth Turan is slightly disturbing, but I get his point. The movie does a great job of putting you in Bella Swan’s shoes, and letting you know what makes her tick. With that in mind, check out our list of 10 things that teenage boys can find out about teenage girls when they see this movie.
Girls Like Boys Who Ignore Them
When Edward first sees Bella in class, he stiffens up like he’s smelled a dead skunk and avoids her like the plague. Days go by and he doesn’t return to class, but she searches for him every day. Finally, when he does come back, he alternates between being nice to her, and telling her she shouldn’t be friends with him. It ends up driving Bella nuts, which is maybe what he wanted all along. Next time you see a girl you’re interested in, make sure she catches your eye, then act like she repulses you and you should be well on your way.
Girls Like Boys Who Are Mysterious
It’s important to maintain an air of mystery about yourself, and not come in all blundering like cheerful dork Mike Newton in the movie. The guy is an open book, and as a result Bella is bored by him. The only thing that catches her fancy at the new school is the bunch of aloof, slightly goth students who mosey in with tons of hair product looking like they wandered off the campus of a private school. Don’t let people know about your past, sulk around, and randomly break off during conversations and walk away. You’ll be a man of mystery.
Girls LIke Boys Who Talk About Their Feelings
While you can’t come out and do this right away, because then you violate the rule of first ignoring the girl, eventually you have to pony up and spill your secrets. Although the key is being mysterious for period of time during which you’re doing all of the “reeling in” work. In order to keep that girl you’re going to have to let her know your big secret, and make her feel like she’s the only one in the world who knows it. Of course, it helps if the secret is that you’re a hundred years old and a vampire, but the fact that you used to wet the bed until you were 10 might work as well. The key is to just open up at some point and confide in her, without seeming like a whiner.
Girls Like Boys With Hair Product
Have you even seen Edward’s hair in Twilight? Seriously, it’s ridiculous. He looks like the lovechild of James Dean and Elvis, and he has to spend at least an hour getting the ‘do ready for school every day, although we never get to see how he preps it. Do vampires also get the gift of extremely well-coiffed hair? And he’s not the only one, his vampy brethren all have hair that looks like it came out of one of those books you see in the waiting areas of hair salons. The sort of hair catalogues you’re meant to pick your next look out of. Robert Pattinson fans call it “sex hair”, which either means it’s sexy hair, or it’s what your hair looks like after sex. Either way, pick up some product and start working on your locks.
Girls Stammer Around Boys They’re Interested In
If you’re looking for one of the signs that she’s really into you, this is a good one. If she can barely get through a sentence when she’s talking to you, then she wants you. Either that or she might be grammatically challenged, but let’s keep hope alive and assume that she’s just nervous. When Edward finally starts talking to Bella she sounds like Woody Allen, and you’ll need to look for those same tongue-tied signs. Besides staring at you constantly, the tangled tongue is about the only other visual cue you’ll get that she’s into you.
Girls Want Sex Just As Much As Boys Do
This one shatters an age-old myth that guys just want to get in girls’ pants. Let me tell you, girls want to get in your pants just as badly. Bella definitely tries to put the moves on Edward, and she pursues him a lot harder than he pursues her. There’s no discussion about waiting for an appropriate time or making sure the moment is extra special. No, she just wants to get him out of those clothes and get busy. Not to say that Bella’s a slut, because she’s actually a pretty chaste girl. But she definitely wouldn’t mind getting Edward in the sack for some extra-curricular activities.
Girls Like Boys Who Can Resist The Urge
Whether that urge is to suck your blood or go all the way in bed, girls love a guy with self-restraint, and it also goes back to the whole “ignore her and it’ll drive her crazy” tip near the top of this list. Edward and Bella have one fairly intense makeout scene in this movie. They’re up in Bella’s bed, and she’s in her panties. Things get hot and heavy and suddenly Edward flies backwards and slams into the wall. He knows he has to be careful with her or he’ll probably tear her to shreds. Instead of getting naked and going for it, he just lays next to her and watches her sleep.
Girls Like Boys Who Can Play The Piano
Although you’d hope that could work for just about any instrument, I don’t know if you’re going to be able to reel them in with the French Horn or the Oboe. Was Kenny G. ever a chick magnet? Stick with the basics, like a guitar or the piano. Edward plays a tune for Bella, and according to my book-obsessed Twilight friends, he actually writes a song for her later in the series. Which of course would drive any girl nuts. Still, the piano makes you look sensitive and it’s less phallic of an instrument than a guitar. It’ll make you look moody, adds more mystery, and it is like kryptonite to a girl’s heart.
Girls Like Boys Who Play Sports
Even if you’re an immortal being that survives on the blood of others, girls will still dig it if you can hit those balls into deep center field. There’s a fairly ridiculous moment in Twilight where a huge thunderstorm gives the vampires a chance to play baseball, since the thunder masks the sound when they pound the ball. They invite Bella to tag along and you can see how excited she gets when Edward makes a spectacular catch. It’s not exactly as romantic as sitting in the stands and watch your man make a free throw or break free for a touchdown, but it’s as close as Bella can get, and she loves it. So take something up, even if it’s kickball.
Girls Like Bad Boys
For years girls have been loving the archetype of the rebel, the guy who hangs out by himself, sports tattoos, rides a motorcycle, gets in trouble every now and then. Well, there’s nothing badder than a guy who could potentially kill you for lunch, and who has to constantly put himself through physical pain by resisting the urge to open up your jugular as your blood sings to him. Outwardly the vampires in Twilight just have pale skin and sparkle like diamonds when they’re in the full sunlight, but inside they’re a raging storm of emotions. While you might not be able to become a vampire, just talk back to a teacher or consider that tattoo you’ve always wanted. It’ll work roughly the same magic.

This post is priceless. Incredibly astute observations. Another that could be added to the list is: She has to feel safe with you. This could be standing up for yourself or her in a social situation, driving around super fast on a slippery road and somehow not crashing, or the most common one, saving her from a skidding van by simply running across the parking lot and extending your hand to block it. That’ll really get her going.

Mr. Kevin Kelly must be quite slick with the ladies, although the scathing comments about the movie won’t do him any favors… What I’m seeing now is that when a guy admits to liking Twilight he insantly becomes more attractive, so there’s your eleventh tip.

That is a load of crock!!! obviously am a girl and…even though those theories are correct there are more to a girl than that!!!! Girls want a guy who loves and cares for them… and girls want a guy, or should I say MAN, who will stay by her side and be commited…and not cheat on her, that is the main thing.

Personally, I found that all very boring. Although a slim few things were on the spot about SOME teenage girls, most of them were awful excuses to point out why girls don’t like some of the teenage boys. The fact that all of them have product in their hair.. Is because they are IN A MOVIE. Were they have professional hair stylists? Even if Emmett had practically no hair at all, James look like he just through it into a ponytail; Which was a wig. Edwards had a little bit of gel. Jaspers.. Well his hair is almost naturally that way.
Not trying to start anything, but as a teenage girl.. Most of these reasons are bullshit.

You are taking the movie in a more literal sense then it was intended
The reason why the books as well as the movie are so widely cultivated is because edward is the ideal guy: a gentleman, loves unconditionally, selfless, a knight-in-shining-armor, and he isn’t a man whore who is just looking for some action. Any guy reading this: don’t fool yourself innto thinking that getting a couple tattoos, talking back to a teacher, playing a girl hot and cold and walking away from her mid-sentence to look mysterious will get you any teenage girl, because you might just be looked at like the plague and treated like the slime-ball you are for following these 10 steps.
I agree with madinson and anonymous and all who has said the same things! This was really stupid.. I am a teenage gilr, and I didn’t agre with anything of this, exept that we like boys who talks about their feelings. And you have completely misunderstood Twlilght, Edward is NOT a bad boy. He hasn’t decided his desteny, and he tryes all he can to not hurt Bella. Hes a gentlemen, nice and kind. We like him because he don’t tryes to be cool all the time, he cares more for bella than anything, is willing to die for her, protect her, and even follow her to make sure she is safe! He always make sure she’s okay, and he talks true, and give the fuck about what others might think about him and bella!

Girls like boys whom love them - desperately, completely and passionately. Girls like boys who are attentive enough to perceive and appreciate their hidden qualities. Girls like boys who try to do what they think is best for the girl they love even if it means denying the satisfaction of their own desires.
Without this sincerity, then all 10 points mentioned do not work. With sincere devotion the boy can have whatever attributes he really does have and she will love him desperately, completely and passionately.
No quick fix, no pat formula – Sorry.
Don’t forget though, while Edward had his own virtues all along, he only became a great lover once he met Bella. And vice versa. I really think there’s no point in trying to put on mysterious airs etc. in hopes of attracting the girl you like. Is that what Edward did? I mean, I know this is a fictional story, but it intrigues something in us, right? Draw the right conclusions, I’m just saying.

i love edward, and the advice about this, it is soooo true..i was saying “thats soo right” to myself the whole time… everybody thinks i am crazy about twilight, i am. guys are always seeing girls read the books and see the movie, but they dont know whats happening, so they wont get girls as easily. I am getting my boyfriend to see the movie with me when it comes out in stores, his mom is even reading it!
This is just pure awesome! It gave me a good laugh and I can’t believe how serious some people are taking it. Personally, I think the Twilight series is absurd (and yes I have read them) so it’s nice to see someone poking some fun at it!

This was really funny to me. It cleverly points out all of the confusing issues with the beginning of Edward and Bella’s relationship, and it’s probably really true, too; maybe that’s what boys got out of the books/movie, tragically…

Me being a girl myself i know that i hate it when guys ignore me. it makes me feel terrible and i lose all hope. *sigh* Also, hair is not important, that much, and extreme hair products are not good like when guys dont like girls with loads of make up. You no i am a girl and i no a lot of girls and we talk about this sort of stuff a lot, and i have to say that a lot of what you’ve written is bollocks girls don’t like a bad boy or one to ignore them they like someone nice who they can talk to who will be caring, it doesn’t matter if you play sports or not it makes no difference, girls don’t care if a lad can play piano or not they don’t have to be able to play an instrument but a lot of girls do like boys that can play the guitar, it is true about the resist thing, girls aren’t as mad about sex as boys are but they do like it and do love having it, girls don’t mind about boys with hair product if anything they think it’s really cut messy, it doesn’t matter if your mysterious although it does give you a bit of an edge and lastly we don’t want a guy that’s totally touchy feely but we do like a guy that can open up a bit or you can trust them enough to talk to you and tell you when there feeling down. These are great qualities in a guy if you go by this you want fail. x

Ha, I thought it was pretty good, though you might want to add that those are the things that will get a guy a girl like Bella. Plus, half the people who read this might want a highlighted note saying the “ignore portion” is only a portion, and not a permanent rule.
You should probably give Edward a little credit for the fact that he’s loyal and doesn’t look at any other girls when he’s with her, etc., or the idea that he’s rather intelligent, seems little smug perhaps, but, when it’s well-warranted and mostly in jest, that’s probably ok.
The hair product one IS basically just a bash on the movie, perhaps reasonable bash, but if you’re trying to help the guys, it would have been better to Not put that up. Instead, may have mentioned being a decent human being. I know, being human does knock some of the danger away, but it still has it’s charms.
Personally, I’d go for the werewolf myself anyday… or, at least, anyday when he has Short hair.

Take this one for example, doing this to a girl could make them think 1 he’s a loser and i don’t care. 2 he doesn’t even want to get to know me… did i offend him? 3 they could get really hurt emotionally especially if they look up to/ have a crush on/ trust him.

First I would like to say that this article was the funniest thing I’ve read regarding twilight so far. Kevin Kelly, you have a great sense of humor. And I dig that. i feel like the twilight movie put every girl under a stereotype. Bella falls in love with edward not because of all these things she finds out later but because she thought he was good looking. That goes to show that stephane meyer insulted girls by making them seem shallow. The only reason she probably wrote this whole storyline was because she herself is shallow and wishes her life could be lived the way she wrote Bella’s to live by. It pathetic

I have read all the books, and seen the film. I think that list is just meant for a joke.
Everyone likes differrent typesof guys, I think the reason Edward works i(in the book) is because that is the genuine charachter, however if you are a “happy go lucky” guy, well then copying E.C will just make you seem fake. I agree that E.C is sick when he breaks into her house to watch her sleep. Stephanie Meyer wrote this FICTIONAL book and so although the whole killing your wife and doing it with a dead guy is really kind of gross in the FICTIONAL world it mekes sense!

I’m a girl and I KNOW girls don’t like guys who ignore them. If a guy ignores us, we assume that he’s not interested and we MOVE ON. We aren’t shallow. But if a boy acts indifferent, we take that as a sign that he wants nothing to do with us.

As a teenage girl, I must say if a guy were like this I’d probably not want to have anything to do with him.
Being ignored, for example, kind of pisses me off. What you describe as being “mysterious” would probably bore me, and have me thinking the guy is a self-absorbed, melodramatic idiot. I generally find hair product ridiculous, and the “bad boy” usually strikes me as an insecure, attention-seeking loser.
I do, however, love when a guy can play sports, but that’s mostly because I love playing sports myself. Piano probably wouldn’t impress me much.
But that’s just me.
I would tell teenage boys: this list is what girls want, if you don’t jave some of those things, it’s okay, don’t waste your time trying to get them right. Eventually a girl who will like you will show up, focus on school, stay in it, get your future right, because stupid teen girls are not the ones that will give you a good carreer… Know what i’m saying?
