Karina, as always, belatedly, as always, I say to you, "Thank you, and thank you, and thank you,"...for asking real questions and willingly listening to these real answers. I'd read the Van Sant/Reichardt interview in BOMB with a great amount of excitement, but I have to say that outside one brief moment in that interview--when Reichardt speaks about stopping to help a woman whose car had broken down--I was not terribly impressed with that particular dialogue. This, though, this...It speaks for itself.

Melissa,

Todd Haynes can by a house because he's reached a different level of success. There are plenty of male directors with the same amount of success as Reichardt that are is the same boat. The truth is, it's tough, regardless of your gender.

I also really like this (slightly "confrontational") interview with Kelly:

It really is refreshing to see a filmmaker who isn't necessarily looking to "graduate" to big studio films.

Great interview. I so appreciate that it's not the typical, mundane directorial interviews that we get most of the time. I think its really interesting to note the disparity that Reichardt points out between indie male directors and indie female directors. Todd Haynes can buy a house, yet Kelly Reichardt cannot. Also, while I wish we all weren't in this economic pickle, the film has become even more relevant than even a few months ago and I'm glad its provoking conversations about a topic we all are anxious about.
