The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the nominees for the annual Golden Globes, and the LA Times has all the info. First-read surprises? The Visitor gets a nod for Best Motion Picture Drama while Milk doesn’t; both Robert Downey Jr AND Tom Cruise were nominated for Best Supporting Actor (a category which the Globes don’t break down by genre) for their work in Tropic Thunder; and Happy-Go-Lucky, which has been racking up the critics nods with several Best Actresses for Sally Hawkins, was completely shut out. Take a look at the full list here, and let us know what you’re particularyl happy or sad about.
glad to see Wall-E on the list, saw it over the weekend and surprisingly enjoyed it. I was hoping Vanessa Williams would receive a nod, but oh well.
The Visitor wasn’t nominated for anything but even though I haven’t seen it, I question The Reader’s inclusion over Milk.
Also, Happy-Go-Lucky got a bunch of comedic nods - I have a feeling it should win most of those, esp considering it is competing against Mamma Mia and Burn After Reading.
I kept thinking that the Milk snub in the supporting category was due to so many contenders canceling each other out. But then that should have happened with Tropic Thunder too. Strange that the foreign press love that movie enough for those noms but not for Best Comedy.
Can anyone explain to me how Ledger’s work in THE DARK KNIGHT is the equivalent of a supporting performance when Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for less than twenty minutes screen time in SOTL?
Maybe I’m just being daft, but I didn’t see a comedy or a musical when I saw “Viicky Christina Barcelona,” I saw a sort of sexual coming-of-age drama with a few funny moments, but not enough for me to think of the film as a comedy. Also, I have to say, I got pretty amped when I read “The Visitor” had been nominated and was disappointed to find that it had not. I program an arthouse theater in a relatively small town, and “The Visitor” was one of our biggest hits this year. It sould out our 135-seat auditorium about seven times, and our patrons were leaving the theater after every screening engaged in some pretty serious debates about immigration, so I have a soft spot for the film.
