I don’t get it.

I was looking at a comments thread at Jeff Wells’, with various responses to Ron Rosenbaum’s Slate slamming of “The Reader,” and seeing such considered eesntially terrifying pronouncements such as “…If you were Jewish, as I assume Rosenbaum is, I guess that would be your opinion. I simply see it as another point of view…” and “I’m tired of people screaming what an evil, twisted monster Hitler was,” got me to thinking that, well, maybe right about now we actually could use a completely un-nuanced Nazi-bashing movie…

Except that Tarantino always has that ironic smirk behind his un-nuanced surface. Based on the trailer, it’s hard to see this simply as a this-time-we-win (or this-time-we-acted-early-and-decisively-ginst-evil) picture in the vein of First Blood or Valkyrie because of the ridiculous bloodlust on display. But I’ll be curious to see where it goes.

If you ask me, Tarantino’s got just a tiny bit of political commentary in store. I highly doubt even he’s so stupid as to push a purely jingoistic agenda. When I heard that line in the trailer about how the enemy uses “terror” and shows no mercy…so we will show no mercy to them — I couldn’t help think there will be a revelation that causes them to partially reject that statement.

I think it will be a straight forward “Jews fucking with Germans for once” display that I can’t wait to see. Death Proof was somewhat about a reversal of power (male-to-female empowerment) and I could see this going down the same route.

Not that a premise like this needs hefty commentary.

What’s not to get? Fighting the bad guys lets us get our own evil urges out. Make them less than human = watch the body parts fly and enjoy.
