Although it may seem like the relationship between Lucas and Justin need be explored, it is really irrelevant to the film. I grew up with these kids and I was friends with them as they were filming this. The film started off as a school project which got Dylan suspended. Dylan, Dan, Lucas, and Tom would have been doing these things even if there wasn't a camera there, Justin was just lucky enough to have the talent to turn it into media. The reason that the relationship between Justin and Lucas isn't explored is because it has almost nothing to do with the film. This is about Dub G and Dub G alone, it isn't some heart warming tale of 2 brothers. I'm glad someone is telling this story because when I think of high school I think of this shit.

Wait, so did "In a Dream" also bother you? If you see or have seen October Country (you should), you might be similarly frustrated.

I was really happy that, apart from a few out-of-frame moments, Donais managed to stay out of the final product. I'm having a hard time coming up with an example of a film where the director does get involved without hindering the cinematic quality...Usually, that just results in awkwardness because it snaps you out of this interesting world by reminding you that you're watching a film. And that ruins things.
