McDowell estimates that more than 200 sets were used in the production, “more than I’ve ever been involved with.” For locations such as Nite Owl’s basement, realism was key. “It’s hard to work with, but really hard to do it any other way and be believable,” McDowell explains. But that conceit didn’t apply to every scene. “We weren’t about to start building glass towers on Mars,” the production designer says.
