A few days ago, Cinematical’s Scott Weinberg reminded us, via his Twitter, that Ghostbusters II actually sucked. So, will it be any surprise to anyone when Ghostbusters 3 is the biggest disappointment since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Considering the movie is nowhere near production, let alone release, it may be a tad too early to start the Ghostbusters 3 backlash. But thanks to some quotes from a roundtable interview with Dan Aykroyd that appeared yesterday on the MTV Movies Blog, a few internerds have begun rolling out a bandwagon filled with low expectations. Always the film cynic, I’m joining in, but for now only as a messenger of negative responses.

Keep in mind there’s a good chance none of Aykroyd’s revealed plot points will actually make it into the film. But also keep in mind that in the end, the movie will probably be even worse than anything we can imagine involving Ghostbuster “cadets.”

  • Lane Brown at Vulture brings up the first sequel as a reference point:

We certainly won’t pretend that Ghostbusters II didn’t have a baby in it — but “cadets”? “Boys and girls”? Will we be asked to believe that children can properly operate proton packs? “Dimension to dimension”? Will this new Ghostbusting Academy be like Hogwarts? This vexes us.

  • Commenting on that blog, “FENEL” suggests a better idea:

Has anyone thrown out the brilliant idea of having Michel Gondry direct JB and Mos Def in the sequel? My bet is their “remake” from Be Kind Rewind will be far better than anything these guys come up with.

  • Commenting at Worst Previews, “defiant1″ makes an educated guess, also referenceing the baby from Ghostbusters II:

I have a feeling that Oscar, Dana’s son, might play a role in this somehow, perhaps as a trainee. He would be about 20 now.

  • Russ Fischer at CHUD must have been at the same junket as MTV, as he shares some extra quotes from Aykroyd, including a slight acknowledgment of Ghostbuster II’s suckiness:

he still understands the second Ghostbusters movie is mostly crap, based on the following: “I respect Sigourney’s view towards protecting the quality of the first movie, and the good things that were in the second movie.” So there’s that.

  • Dan Hopper at Best Week Ever got the quote from CHUD, and he kinda live-blogged his reading experience. Here’s the end:

120 Seconds After Reading: If someone described this plot to me and it wasn’t a Ghostbusters movie, I’d immediately think it was the dumbest piece of crap I’d ever heard.

180 Seconds After Reading: Will this involve the Kid Blues Brother from Blues Brothers 2000?

200 Seconds After Reading: Please, Lord, let this movie not be terrible.

  • Commenting on that blog, Courtney Enlow of HoboTrashcan worryingly writes:

Please dearlordunicornjesus, let this not be the American Pie: Band Camp of Ghostbusters movies. My fear is that it will be all new youngens with brief cameos by the OG’s. I’m only okay if the individual who we’ll love to hear who it is is Rick Moranis.

  • Alex Billington at First Showing appears to have mixed feelings:

Whoa! He just mentioned a lot of interesting things there. Dimension to dimension? Psychotrons and neuron splitters? What about the nuclear-powered proton packs that they used to wear? I’m not sure if [Aykroyd] was joking, but this is some interesting stuff, and I’m not sure if it’s even good?

  • Rodney at The Movie Blog is “looking forward to this the more and more I hear about it,” though his positivity doesn’t help his side when he lightly references another terrible film series:

I kinda like the idea of a whole class of Ghostbusting hopefuls lining up. It sounds like they are implying that 20 years later the Ghostbusters company has gone franchise and the original Busters are going to play police academy trainers.

The idea of another Ghostbusters has been a dream since childhood. It will always be part of my life as it was something i grew up with. The theme tune never gets old, nor does the films. I like the idea of having the likes of Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd as they grantee laughs. But not filled in the same shoes as peter venkman etc because it seems many fans are linking certain actors to certain characters. The idea of Cadets seems to sound like its gunna be like spy kids. Not Good. this has many people in fear but the writers will have to do a great job as we all have very high expectations of the new film. As a film maker myself, i would of just kept the original members all through out busting ghosts. having them old will just add to the comedy it was suppose to be. but i shall be going to see it on the day it comes out, hopefully leaving the cinema with a big grin of being satisfied.

I thought they did a good job with Ghostbusters 2. Anyhow i think if they keep the orginal cast a big part in the film then i will go and see it. If they leave them as side line guys it depends on the main actors for me.

    Excuse me? A terrible series??
Policy Academy 4- Citizens on Patrol is an amazing movie.
As is 1 and 2. 3 was pretty woeful.
Maybe thats what we’ll see here. A Ghostbusters 3 - Citizens on Patrol.
Just imagine Tackleberry with a proton pack on.
THAT my friends would be cinematic genious

I hope, this movie be more terrific, and the real ghostbusters save the day in near end of the movie.

Are you all idiots? We are you all so dissapointed already? have any of you even read the previous script aykroyd put up? As well the whole cadets thing, come on guys. did any of you even watch Extreme Ghostbusters? Sure it had a short running but if that were put forward to film it could be succesful. So many negative thoughts behind everyone yet no one truly seems to have liked the franchise as much as they should. Its taken them this long to all get pumped up enough about the film that i think it cant; it wont be horrible. Its coming up on 25 years since the film and i think that they have had enough time to PERFECT the film innot only plot, but quality and so on and so forth.
