Thanks to those comments, I went into Treeless Mountain thinking the girls' mother would die and they would be wandering about completely alone.

Therefore, I expected the film to be a lot sadder than it is. Where I bawled my eyes out through Fireflies, I was smiling throughout most of Treeless. Perhaps it's just that I've always had a sort of orphan fantasy, though I've definitely also simultaneously always had fears of such a scenario happening to my life.

In any event, I ultimately find the film to be more hopeful than completely heartbreaking, especially considering that it's autobiographical.

Yeah this does conjure up a lot of memories of Grave of the Fireflies. Looking forward to see it, the trailer has me excited. Also way happy to see that they used "Layers" by Asobi Seksu as the soundtrack to the trailer.

Reminds me of the Ghibli studio film, Grave of the Fireflies.
Is this film coming out with a theatrical release? Hope it does.
