The film is less about Chris and Chelsea that it is about the transactions they make with each other and other people. It's not about maximizing the transactions, it's about the transactions themselves and the transactionality of the quotidian. Soderbergh's point is that the economy defines our every interaction. Also Chris is commodified in a very similar way to Christine.
