I refuse to believe that Sacha Baron Cohen’s stunt at last night’s MTV Movie Awards — in which he, as Bruno from the upcoming Bruno, flew through the air in an assless winged costume and landed with his legs wrapped around Eminem’s neck, was in any way unscripted — Completely lacking in genuine (and genuinely dangerous) spontaneity — and completely ripped off from a Howard Stern gag from 17 years ago — the incident feels of a piece with the carefully managed anarchy on display in the Bruno clips shown in March at SXSW. See it for yourself after the jump. I’ll look forward to your comments telling me to “lighten up.”

    Photoshopped!

(the rig was carefully positioned at Eminem’s seat, so MTV was in. Eminem was probably not, because he does not come off very heroic)

  • José Marinho said

I just laughed. LOL. “are you serious?!” lol . look tis eminem getting fucked the way he wanted to prank other guys..

  • Fartman said

    yes…totally scripted.
after watching the video the second time…you can see that sasha/bruno is purposely holding his right arm/wing out so it would hit the hanging speakers…which happen to be directly over Eminem. The cameraman also happens to know exactly where bruno is going to land before he “goes down” on eminem and zooms on M to get a reaction.

and M’s entoruage sits there want just watches?
M sits there and watches Fartman come down and land perfectly in his lap?

please…if MTV spent as much (little) time on editing or camera timing (awful editing every year by MTV) as they did with this crappy attempt at comedy the kids choice awards …I mean the MTV movie awards may actually be bearable to watch. and twilight won awards for what?
awful script and acting…that movie should have gone straight to the Ctv network or whatever that awful low end station that brings us crap movies…come to think of it the scifi channel at 11pm on a Tuesday night…

MTV was in on it. It’s probable Eminem knew Bruno was going to drop in on him. But I don’t think Eminem expected Bruno to wind up 69-ing him with a bare ass in front of millions of people.

Eminem has the #1 album in the country. I doubt he’d consent to having SBC’s crotch shoved in his face on live TV — that’s humiliating.

    He was played.

  • Chris Menning said

I wouldn’t be too distraught to find out it was scripted. If Eminem was already aware of the fact that most people would just like to see him treated this way, then kudos to him for complying.

  • DJK said

Eminem is a douchebag. He probably wanted some of that a**.

  • Me said

Oh god. You have no idea do you. ”Look at Little Miss Cynical enlightening us!!” ofcourse it was staged. Sacha Baron Cohen pulls amazing stunts such as this to gain massive publicity. Eminem’s reaction however was not a scripted. How the hell do you get to blog with a mind as shallow as a paddling pool?

  • rara said

you´re missing the point. take a look the title of Sacha Baron Cohen’s newest film, and maybe you´ll understand.

“Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Male”

like Borat, it is political provocation in art form.

  • ringle said

    Rap that!

  • Dc said

Bruno. A bitch and a fukin fag eminem is the best rapper alive fuck ali g he a disrespectful fag

  • BlackMarketIndex said

With all the homophobia and general humorlessness in hip-hop, I’d actually have to give Eminem credit if it was totally scripted.

  • Erin said

MTV hasn’t had anything spontaneous on their awards shows since…well, I can’t remember if they’ve done anything truly spontaneous. Even the Madonna/Britney lip lock (different awards show, I know) from five years ago struck me as calculated. It’s staged for the benefit of being reported on the various news shows, networks, and the internet. Daniel Boorstin published an excellent book about this very phenomenon some 40 odd years ago called “The Image”.

As for Eminem, he got pissed off when Triumph the Insult Comic Dog made fun of him. I would be totally flattered if Triumph or one of SBC’s characters made fun of me. I like his stuff, but the guy can be such a tool at times.

  • Ed said

If you pre-empted the possibility of people telling you to lighten up, you must have known that it’s at least a little bit true…

My point is, don’t read too much into a silly stunt that’s designed to elicit nothing more than a light-hearted chuckle among the viewers. It’s just as inconsequential if it was scripted than if it wasn’t.

  • Skyfish said

Yeah. Scripted. Mostly everything you see on T.V. is scripted or staged, even “reality” tele. Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see, especially with T.V. Mtv being the worst.

Did Em know? Who knows and who cares?

  • Jim said

So it was scripted, who cares? As someone mentioned earlier Eminem wouldn’t agree to have someone’s crotch in his face. Personally I think it was harsh on Eminem - not good for his rep as a rapper at all. It was unexpected and seeing Cohen spinning around on the wire was hilarious. Just because it’s not funny after you’ve watched it a million times already trying to pick out the flaws in it doesn’t mean it’s not great entertainment. LIGHTEN UP

  • almstadt said

i thought it was very erotic

  • charly brown said

Who cares if it was scripted or not?
    It was hysterical!
Eminem looks like he could use a little “Bruno”!
    Lighten Up Karina.
So tired & jaded are we?

  • Dave said

omg karina i just saw this blog entry - complete with your picture - on cnn! you are so totally famous now!

  • Seamus said

Haven’t you guys ever heard of a prank? It was scripted… by MTV, and Sacha Baron Cohen, at Eminem’s expense.

Just because the camera cut to Em before Bruno dropped does not mean that Em was in on the joke. His poor, humorless reaction makes it clear that the joke was on him, and that he didn’t see it coming.

  • Steve said

@Fartman… shut up you jackass. There isn’t a person in the world who doesn’t realize that the stunt was staged. The only question is whether eminem was in on it. And if you didn’t giggle at least a little at that, then you have an awful sense of humor, and, therefore, you suck. As far as awards shows go, that gag was pretty fuggin funny. Or did you prefer hugh jackman’s style of comedy?

  • t bone and the chick p gravy said

I love reading blog comments. people can be so rude. I am glad you spoke your mind…seems like every one has nothing but praise for that stunt at the award show, and frankly…it was lame.

  • john stamos said

Who the fuck cares if it’s scripted?
    Most comedy is.
Does this really need to be completely impromptu in order to be funny?
    No.
And it may have slight similarities to the much less funny Howard Stern video, but in no way is it “completely ripped off.”

  • j said

Your last comment and disinterested prose style convey a feeble attempt to elicit anger from your readers. The point was not to exploit spontaneity (or dangerous spontaneity)…it was to have Sacha Baron Cohen’s bare buttocks in Eminem’s face. True, spontaneity would have made it funnier, especially since the unexpected is what Cohen does best (as evidenced by Da Ali G show and the Borat movie).

  • Moose said

Fake or not that was to funny you need to lighten up Karina Longworth .

  • chase said

Do you realize that, through your cynicism that is in no way related to your ignorant youth, you are helping spread this message about and, therefore, garnering more interest in MTV, Mr. Cohen’s movie, and Eminem! Keep fighting the good fight against capitalism, though.

  • Bucky said

WTF. Eminem got ASS in his face. PUNKD. Definitely staged & executed to punk Eminem. IF M&M was kewl, he’d kiss SBC’s pucker. M&M… mmm GOOD. :)~

  • Bonnie said

Ummm…has it escaped anyone’s notice that while Howard Stern made his epic journey through the air and over the audience as Fart Man that Luke Perry, who oh-so-eagerly posed as his minion, has hardly been heard about since then? Yeah, that was a real career booster, Mr. Brown-noser. The one thing I admire about Sacha Baron Cohen is that whatever he pulls, he pulls it on his own and however it is received, he takes it on the chin. He doesn’t need a lot of ass-kissers to validate himself, right or wrong. He also does what he does in such a playful, tongue-in-cheek spirit that even his very subjects can’t help but laugh along with him. THAT’S talent, Folks. Howard Stern has made an art form of being belligerently offensive. Now, THAT’s a real yawn to me. Any junior high-schooler can (and does) do what he’s done since way back then.

  • Joe Phelps said

It was clearly a conscious riff on the Howard Stern stunt, not a rip-off.

And the level to which Cohen took it, making the homophobic, dish-it-out-but-can’t-take-it Eminem the butt of the joke (no bun intended), was a clever update of the fifteen-year-old stunt that was so obviously being referenced.

  • ALBiMale1975 said

Well cutting to Eminem well before it happened, him seeing it coming, saying so, and not moving would be a Dead Give Away that it was staged.
Put on top of that the whole Gay thing a few years back and singing with Elton John and you got well more then an additional 15 mins. of Fame as you can tell from people talking about it here. Not to mention Eminem is still big on MTV and they are not about to “Punk” him and make an enemy of him, Dre, 50, and everyone else associated with them.

  • citybuzz said

Did you not see Eminem’s visage when angel Bruno descended bum first in his face?

Oh my goodness I could smell his anger as well as Bruno’s butt hole from here. Oh yes my friends it was Bruno doing naughtythings to a naughty Eminem. And good on Eminem for leaving. I am one does not likes laughter of others directly my way.

Oh and why do you Godless Americans thank God for an award? First off - there is no God and secondly your hairdresser is more important to you than some silly non existent god. Methinks. You have been most kind. I love all.

  • Johnny E. said

Holy Christ, you are one ugly bitch. No wonder you feel an irrepressible need to comment on that particular … ahem, “stunt” and express your hip, out-there, disbelief for all to see. Hey, any publicity’s good publicity, yes?

    Wait.

Does that mean my reply to this website constitutes an even-sadder desire to be heard in the e-universe?

  • RSG said

    get a life karina!

  • Djasp said

Since Emimen can be heard swearing while he walks up the stairs he must have been wearing a mic. So yeah… he was in on it.

  • citybuzz said

oh but there are microphones that can hear the scratching of a tiny marsupial from behind reinforced cement. Oh dear boy. Tender sweet child.

  • Lelik said

I think eminem was totally in on it. I think I saw one of his entourage giggling there while swinging bruno back and forth… their reaction looks scripted/rehearsed to me… :)

  • Jason said

Why do you have to take the fun out of it by over-analyzing and picking over minor details? So what if it has been done before 17 years ago? If your memory’s so great that you can make insignificant comparisons about things that happened 17 years ago and today, then I’m sure your talents could be better used elsewhere.

  • KRI said

Fuck all cuz Eminem is the most Godgifted rapper in the Univers and bruno the motherfucker is just a gay who wants some shit and of course EM is goin to shit on him asap

  • almstadt said

karina, you obviously have no sense of the erotic and sensual nature of what happened, which I think was the whole point of the thing in the first place. I seriously suggest tonight when you go home that you put some soft music on the stereo, take a bubble bath and light some fragranced candles. No, Sahsa Cohen is not very profound, probably a little less profound than eminem but sometimes in life there are moments of magic and unfettered milkiness….

  • Jack said

Lighten up. Of course it was scripted. Eminem’s part wasn’t. Done deal

  • citybuzz said

Won’t hear bad words against Bruno, or Eminem. Both talented boys, nay geniuses! But oh if E was in on it then I am the Sultan of Sulawesi

  • Eloy said

Well, obviously Sacha was in on it.
HE staged it! He purposely landed on Eminem.
Eminem was NOT in on it!

  • rob said

Wow, I came here to watch the video for some entertainment, and had the misfortune of reading your pathetic intro analysis. Is this REALLY your blog post? this must be a joke - I mean, since when did the MTV awards get trivialized to one stunt by a college grad who writes film reviews?

If it weren’t for the stunt, I - like so many others - wouldn’t have even cared the award show was on.

    Publicity - check
    Viral - check
    Funny - check
    Scripted - WHO CARES.

  • Gambit said

Of course it was scripted for cying out loud, who the hell cares? The point is eminem didn’t know it was doing to happen. THAT is the whole damn point.
