Dog Day Afternoon is a great film and one of my all-time favorites but I'm not sure it would apply to this post. I mean, they weren't very "clever" criminals now were they? Of course, that's what makes the film great. Also, they didn't exactly get away with it in the end either...

four words for you:

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR.

Original (1968) Steve McQueen flick, not the flaccid remake with Remington Steele. Who cares if no one really knows what's going on, all you need to know is Steve McQueen is smarter than everybody else (almost everybody else) and he has everything under control. Still, the set-up is original: rich guy robs his own bank (just for the thrill of it) by getting a group of total strangers to pull off the heist for him. What's even more thrilling is watching the hot girl (a stunning Faye Dunaway) move in on him. She's Tommy Crown's equal throughout the film and she may even be the smartest person in the whole affair -- and that's really saying something for 1968. The actual robbery was filmed using hidden cameras. Alan Trustman was the writer. This is the epitome of Sixties cool...and who could forget that chess game?

good list!

You forgot one of the cleverest bank robbing movies - $ - starring a very cute young Goldie Hawn and Warren Beatty. They manage to rob the safe deposit boxes of criminals who can't yell "thief" when they discover they have been robbed.

True, Aaron. I didn't describe the scene as specific as it is, but it is more clever the way he killed each one indirectly.

actually, the joker only kills one guy in his crew. what's brilliant is that he got the rest of them to kill each other one by one. and, of course, the "joke" is that we later find out that he doesn't even care about money, it's just something he uses because he knows people will do anything for it.

Umm... where is "Quick Change"? I know the "getaway" is a bit botched, but hey they DO get away in the end. But, it was a bank heist that "Inside Man" AND "The Dark Knight" copied (the latter didn't copy it in THEIR bank heist scene - although they both involve clowns - but in the climax).

Seriously. Check it out. List is redundant without it.

Joel, the only one I might have spoiled is Inside Man, though that movie isn't about a twist ending or big reveal anyway. And if it is about any kind of secret, Clive Owen's hiding place isn't it.

Starfire,

I never saw Catch That Kid or Bandidas, but I almost mentioned Jumper as being in the same group as The Invisible Man.

Neither the Oceans movies nor Hudson Hawk counts as bank robberies, though, do they?

1)Ok I know this is not clever but i think it comes off as pritty good robbery i loved the one from Catch That Kid just cause its so well thought out even down to the getaway go karts. I mean yes its a kids movie but its also a damn well thought out heist movie.
2) Another One Is The Oceans Movie Both The Original And The Remake I Believe Both Of Those Heist Were Well Done.
3) if we are including impossible or fictional heist the one from Jumper tops my list just popping in and out of the vault i think its genious.
4) A good comedy one though most consider it a bad movie Hudson Hawks first robber of the davinci horse is funny due to the fact they are timing it to music and not just any song but Swinging On Star
5) If Hotness Helps Pull Of Bankheist Bandidas Should Be Number one that was one of the few heist movies where even i just didn't care if it didn't make sense i just wanted to see them pull of the heist
