The 3D revolution (or fad, depending on how you see it) has finally engulfed the classics. Specifically, the format has reached out to Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling adventure story The Three Musketeers, which Paul W.S. Anderson has co-scripted and will direct as a 3D feature.
On the same day we heard about this news, Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News relayed a rumor that Iron Man 2 – and possibly the first Iron Man – could also get the 3D treatment, through a retrofit conversion process. Provided he didn’t simply mishear some kind of reference to Dumas’ The Man in the Iron Mask this would be another big step in the development of 3D cinema.
But is it still too early for all these 3D movies to be getting the greenlight? Sure, The Final Destination 3D did great business over the past weekend, but its 3D effects were terrible. And we’re still unsure whether or not Avatar will be the success that Hollywood hopes it will be.
Since TFD3D topped the box office, though, we’ve been hearing about more sequels and more old movies that we can expect to hit theaters in 3D over the next few years and beyond (provided they continue doing well). So, many a film blog has begun suggesting other movies to be fitted and retrofitted with the technology. Some of them are sampled after the jump and we encourage you to submit your own pitches in the comments section below.
As far as the 3D aspect goes, I’ve made my stance on the technology clear many-a-time: if it’s used subtly and not gimmicky (*cough* The Final Destination! *cough*) then it’s fine. But The Three Musketeers doesn’t in anyway seem like a movie suited for the 3D technology. I just don’t see the point in doing it in that format.
Anderson thinks he can breathe new life into a tired old franchise that no one gives a shit about by making it into a 3D movie. And here I thought Anderson only did video-game movies? Perhaps someone will have to first turn the Three Musketeers into a video game before he can properly adapt it. And then proceed to massacre that adaptation. Circle of life.
It had to come to this: Resident Evil helmer and international K-Y Jelly smuggler Paul W.S. Anderson will take advantage of The Three Musketeers’ title for a new 3D adaptation. Expect some genius at Touchstone to have Three-D Men and a Baby greenlit by lunch.
…it’s becoming more and more common for the studios to revisit their release slates in search of projects that might catch on better were a “3D” placed after the title: Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself 3D. Coco Avant Chanel 3D. Iron Man 2 3D.
Remakes are so passe now. What you really need to do to make a remake matter is to release it in 3D!
And what better film to offer in 3D than a Three Musketeers film. Now we can have gratuitous thrusting of swords in your face just to showcase the technology and get a kneejerk reaction from the crowds. Because that has never been done before.
3D is officially Hollywood’s newest excuse for failing to have original ideas. First it was sequels, then it was remakes, more recently it’s been reboots, and now here we are doing everything over again just so it can be in 3D. You can’t really blame them. The Final Destination was one of the worst movies of the year, yet put it in 3D, and it’s number one at the box office. It seems to work.
The great thing about converting a movie into 3D after the fact is that there’s really no compelling reason to see it in 3D then. The movie wasn’t made with 3D in mind and they’ll definitely release 2D versions of it in theaters. So if like me, you’re starting to get 3D fatigue, you’ll be able to sit down and watch Iron Man 2 in 2D, the way it ought to be, without feeling like you’re missing anything. Call me when they convert it into Holodeck format. Until then, I need a break from polarized goggles.
What will this mean for the rest of Marvel’s slate leading to THE AVENGERS? Will THOR & CAPTAIN AMERICA also go through this process? Or will they be shot from the get go in 3D?
I hope so. I love 3D. The tests I’ve seen of this process are just jaw-dropping.
Granted IRON MAN 2 is going to make a shitload of cash but just because one-minute of footage was feasible (and looked awesome), doesn’t mean it’s prudent to adapt the entire movie. What it does mean though is that there is a high likelihood that IRON MAN 3 will be produced in 3D from the get-go, which could be a pretty awesome thing to behold.
Ghostbusters
The streams would cross right before your eyes. Plus, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in 3D would be worth the price of admission, especially if they could introduce Smell-O-Vision along with it. Mmmm!
“Gremlins 3-D”
It’s a crime against humanity that a freaking British commercial is the closest we’ve ever gotten to “Gremlins 3”. It’s also criminal the way some filmmakers have used 3-D technology. One day, you will pay for making people see a three-dimensional, nude Anthony Hopkins in “Beowulf,” Zemeckis. Just you wait. “Gremlins 3-D” would right other wrongs. Picture this: Billy is enjoying his second decade of gremlins-free chillin’ with Gizmo and Phoebe Cates. Then Gizmo accidentally falls into the ocean and the resulting seas of moist mogwai proceed to eat seafood after midnight in every timezone on earth. In 3-D. That’s right. Move over zombies… it’s a Gremlin apocalypse!
And on top of that, how do you top the last film? I’d like to see Smith and Lawrence blow up an entire city and then have a huge space battle that sends the Moon flying into the Sun, with the bad guy tied to it. But that’s just one idea I have.
THE FINAL DESTINATION 3D was awesome. It’s a frikkin’ horror movie - it is supposed to be gimmicky! Give me a break along with the millions of others that pushed it to number one over another horror movie done in 2D.
Proper 3D for all other formats will NOT have objects flying out at you though. AVATAR will not. 3D is the future of cinema - might as well accept it now rather than stretch it out in the world is flat idiom.
its fine that Disney and Pixar are doing 3d movie but what about hustler and playboy? true 3d porn anyone?
Horror films is more scary in 3D. I hope people won’t get a heart attack from these 3D movies.
I am not a big star wars fan, but I think the first 3 movies would be great in 3D. Any movie that has lots of movement and action on screen would work in 3D.
