TOP STORY:

Christopher Campbell

Christopher Campbell fluctuates between the inclinations to be a pretentious film snob and a fanboy defending blockbuster fluff. He dislikes press screenings because they don't serve popcorn, and he dislikes regular movie theaters because they don't serve GOOD popcorn. He holds a B.A. in film studies from Brooklyn College, which he acquired more than a decade late, having spent his 20's as a film school drop out thumbing his nose at academia. A year prior to going back to school, though, he quit his job in film exhibition (read: popcorn stand manager at a multiplex), moved from Connecticut to NYC and began reviewing and blogging for Cinematical. Other publications he's written for, prior and since, include The Reeler, Where Y'At New Orleans? and READ Magazine. His dream is to one day open a Drafthouse-type cinema in Brooklyn and simply enjoy watching and sharing movies for the rest of his life.

5 Independent Films That Dared Open Independence Day Weekend

posted 1 day ago

July 4th weekend is typically reserved for huge blockbuster releases, particularly those starring Will Smith and/or showcasing America as a force not to be messed with (against aliens or the British). Very, very rarely does an independent release even bother trying to go up against the studios during the big holiday. For example, the only [...]

Asteroids Arcade Game Adaptation Baffles. Today in Film Bloggery 07/02/09

Universal has won a four-studio bidding war for the rights to Atari’s ASTEROIDS video game. Will it just be like ARMAGEDDON or could this be the most original video game adaptation of all time, given that the original game’s plotlessness avails such freedom and creativity?

10 Most Clever Bank Robberies in Movies

posted 2 days ago

Before seeing Johnny Depp as John Dillinger in Michael Mann’s new crime film Public Enemies, we decided to check out an earlier portrayal of the infamous bank robber, Lawrence Tierney in Dillinger. The 1945 picture is a bit disappointing in terms of bank jobs, which are mostly shown in quick succession during a montage. There [...]

Remembering Karl Malden. Today in Film Bloggery 07/01/09

The celebrity deaths keep on happening, which makes me hope that Death takes a holiday at least over the 4th of July weekend. Yesterday we lost actor and baritone singer Harve Presnell, who is best remembered nowadays for playing William H. Macy’s father-in-law in Fargo, and now today we say goodbye to Karl Malden, who [...]

The sexualized preteen rodents the Chipettes make their debut in the new teaser trailer for ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL. If you’re at all turned on by the spot, Chris Hansen would like you to have a seat right over there.

10 Greatest False Deaths in Movies (SPOILERS!)

posted 4 days ago

Are you tired of all the false rumors of celebrity deaths (today it was Rick Astley)? And are you tired of all the jokes that Michael Jackson is really still alive somewhere, hanging out with Tupac, JFK and Elvis? So are we, but we thought we’d take both the obnoxious death hoax trend and the [...]

Transformers 2 Blows Critic-Audience Divide Wide Open. Today in Film Bloggery 06/29/09

The huge opening for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN has widened the gap between critics and moviegoers. Is it worth whining over, or should we concentrate on other things?

10 Hottest “Cougars” in Movies

posted 5 days ago

Apparently three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer has been relegated to playing only “cougars.” The slang term has been used heavily to describe the actress’ latest character, a Parisian courtesan who has an affair with a pretty boy half her age (Rupert Friend). But just prior to appearing in Chéri, which reunites her with the Dangerous [...]

Michael Jackson’s Death Affects Bruno Cut. Today in Film Bloggery 06/26/09

posted 1 week ago

Tragedies often affect films with untimely footage and/or marketing. Usually it’s something like 9/11, a space shuttle disaster or a sniper on the loose that causes Hollywood to show its sensitivity by delaying film releases and pulling trailers from theaters. I can’t recall a situation when the death of an individual influenced an upcoming movie’s [...]

Michael Jackson: Rating the Filmmaker Collaborations

posted 1 week ago

We feel really bad about spotlighting Michael Jackson in three spots on our “Creepiest Kids’ Movies List” yesterday. If we had known he was going to die of cardiac arrest within hours of that post’s publication, we would have maybe limited his presence to one included film, if any at all.
To make up for the [...]

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN has broken the Wednesday opening record with $60.6 million. Will it continue to reign or does it suck enough that it’s already made the majority of its earnings in one day?

10 Creepiest Kids Movies

Earlier this week we got our first look at Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, including character portraits of the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) and Tweedledee and Tweedledum (both played by Matt Lucas). And like most people who saw the images, we believe that this [...]

The Oscars will now have 10 Best Picture nominees rather than 5. This will change the Academy Awards and Hollywood in many ways, for good and bad. The film blogs are of course divided on some of the potential effects.
