I can tell you that, much as I want to see Speed Racer, perhaps w/ the aid of substances I haven't touched since I was a teen, I also cringe at hearing my nephew say "I'm definitely seeing Speed Racer" because it looks like a direct route to acquire A.D.D. In one sitting.

"Not until you can finish an entire book w/out the aid of an adult."
I told him.

Did the Wachowskis just dive into family fair b/c they realized they couldnt' do Sci Fi/Horror etc. anymore, either?

What's next for them? Video Games?
(It sure would be more lucrative than Speed Racer! Ha cha!)

Yeah, you're a bit late to the game this time. And I think you should remember that A LOT of those hits is likely to come from us International YouTube users.

Der Untergang was an enormous hit in Europe, and this particular scene is iconic. Which makes it perfect for these kinds of mashups - Hitler realizing the war is lost is maybe the perfect example of... a downfall. Pairing it with, say, HD-DVD and Hillary, makes perfect sense.

And I'm sure a lot more... to come.

Speed Racer is so much better than critics say. Why kids are staying away from this: I have no idea. I loved it. Granted, I grew up on the animated Speed and thought it was amazing, and I love the Wachowskis' devotion to that series in the movie.

It was fun. It looked beautiful and compared to crap like Transformers or Godzilla, well it was better than those.

I haven't made it to SR yet...but I could not disagree more with Armond White: there were TONS of beautiful shots in IM. Most of them involve being airborne. Two come to mind right away: the massive explosion when the proto-iron man blows the baddies' camp to high heaven and propels himself a mile away into the sand...and Final-model IM's first flight, bursting out of his house into the night sky over Malibu... GORGEOUS.

I really hope that SR's box office isn't going to effect item #3 on your list too much. Hopefully the success of 300, SIN CITY, IM and etc can offset such things in the long run.

Iron Man told a story, well. Speed Racer just had a plot.

"Artistic innovation" on a known property always sounds like a good idea, but I think I'm coming around to the idea that it isn't.

A similar article like this could have been written after Ang Lee's "Hulk" or David Lynch's "Dune." Both of those projects sound like great pairings, but yeeeulch...

Also, another thing this all might be "good" for is the triumph of story. I haven't seen "Speed Racer," so I don't fully know what kind of story it has, but from all the trailers you get the impression there really isn't one and all reviews I saw talked about the lack of one.

"Iron Man," which has a great story thanks to Favreau sticking to Stan Lee's original intent, was #1 again probably mostly for that reason. The neat armor special effects are just a bonus.

You know what would have made Iron Man more interesting? If Tony Stark was not only a genius multi-millionaire engineer, but he was also physically disabled from CP. No joke-- I think it would have made the story so much more emotionally-involving if Stark really, really had to struggle to get out of that cave, and he does so by creating the Iron Man suit, which gives him full mobility. Then the movie becomes about something completely different, and probably a lot more engaging.

FF Coppola is not a sell-out. Rather, he is simply shallow and intellectually dim, with a decent eye for a good camera shot. Too bad - would have made a great DP. He is actually all about the camera and visuals, and absolutely clueless about all but the simplest stories. Unfortunately for film-goers he seems to have transmitted the clueless gene to his offspring. Lost in Translation? Try "Lost in Space" Listen to the director's comments on "Youth Without Youth" if you can stand it.

This probably won't make Glenn feel any better, but Premiere is just shooting itself in the foot, falling into the toilet and flushing itself down the drain.

Quick, name one reason to look at Premiere that doesn't rhyme with Shlenn Shmenny.

okay... so here's where you're wrong about bringing the marvel universe to the screen. The comic books have lots of back story and baggage because they have a monthly book for like 40 or 50 years. That's a lot of stories.

But at most there will be what? 10 movies? 20 movies? There just is not enough time to get that convoluted.

The other thing you are missing that is no movie will be required to watch any of the others. Iron Man will have a cameo in Hulk... but it will be small. All of these movies will enhance each other.

A lot of what makes comics great are not the villains but the interaction between super heroes. Those interactions will be possible with how marvel will be making these films.

While I don't know if a whole film will be about stark losing his armor I think with more heroes you can have better interactions. And with out relying on each film to explain the characters again.

I think we'll know if it's working or not after the avengers movie comes out as it's obviously the lynch pin in the whole thing.

Actually I think the bigger problem with the whole idea is what kind of contracts are these actors signing? What happens where there is a schedule conflict with robert downey? Or he asks for too much money? There is a reason TV shows don't renegotiate contracts every episode and that is what it seems marvel will be forced to do.

Over at filmspotting.net they talked about how annoying it will be if Indy keeps making jokes about how old he's getting. Old people don't always have great taste because they like what's familiar like the rest of us. Only in their case it's arthritis and dentures. Remember how bad Seabiscuit was? And our elders ate.that.horse.shit.up!

I just do not know how intelligent people could believe that an alien emperor locked up alien souls in Douglas DC-8 airliners in volcanoes and then blew them up with hydrogen bombs. And before someone denies it, yes, Will Smith and Tom Cruise are intelligent people.

"Silly and over the top." Glad I'm not alone. I just don't want to blog that because I'm so "expected" to blog that.

Btw: Your review of Iron Man was the best I read. And I read many of them. Including mine. A mighty fine piece of writing.

This all sound like Warner Bros. is just trying to consolidate their off-shoots and better their business prospects for the inevitable economic recession (or Depression!) I don't think it has anything to do with the quality or the performance of the movies that WIP or Picturehouse released. I know-- I'm sounding like a WB shill, but I suspect that New Line, WIP and Picturehouse will all still basically exist but they just won't have a separate name to call themselves.

It's like one of things that Starbucks is doing because they over-expanded-- instead of serving different blends of coffee every day, now they'll just serve the same blend, over and over again, day in, day out, with no green on their coffee cups. (That's right-- I shamelessly made a Starbucks Coffee reference.)

Besides, this is better than Time/Warner/AOL/Fox News Corp./Viacom, all on one banner! It's the lesser of two evils.

I'm planning to see it with my parents, so I can let you know first hand if it's a hit with the over-60 crowd. (I saw the first and third movies with my mom, so I thought it was a tradition I should continue.)

That review is probably fake, knowing AICN. Also, ShogunMaster probably lifted the molestation jokes from Brian Poeshn's routine about Lucas and the Star Wars prequels.

And, yes, here, here, I agree with you, Chris-- hearing a rumor that Indy 4 is "old-fashioned" only makes me want to see it more. Besides, there's needs to be more pop culture for 'old people'. And I don't mean pop culture for baby boomers who are holding on to the last vestiges of their youth, but pop culture that implicitly says to people that it's okay to grow old and become a senior citizen. Our culture is too youth-obsessed, and we need popular entertainment that lets audiences know that old-age isn't a complete nightmare.
