Last year at a New York Film Festival press conference following the premiere of Inland Empire, David Lynch announced that he would never again go back to shooting on film. Yesterday, at the press conference following the New York Film Festival press screening of his HD-shot feature, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, veteran filmmaker Sidney Lumet made an almost identical declaration, predicting that celluloid will be all but obsolete in five years. “I don’t think there’s one director who has ever liked film,” Lumet said. “It’s a pain in the ass, it’s cumbersome, and it’s rigid in its rules.”

Check out the audio clip below for Lumet’s elaboration on the rise of HD, why he thinks “naturalistic photography” is an oxy moron, and anecdotes on the how the drawbacks of celluloid stifled both Dog Day Afternoon and John Schlesinger’s Midnight Cowboy (the female voice heard at the beginning and end of the clip is NYFF selection committee member/EW film critic Lisa Schwarzbaum, who moderated yesterday’s conversation). We’ll have more coverage of Lumet’s excellent Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead later today.

  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer overcame fanboy ire to earn an estimated $57.4 million at the box office this weekend. That’s roughly a million and a half more than the opening take of its predecessor. It’s super-good news for Fox, who ordered a Silver Surfer spinoff last week in hopes of extending the brand beyond the half-life of Jessica Alba’s career.
  • In related news, Fox somehow managed to swing a deal to earn money off of Halo toys without having to shell out for the upcoming pic’s special effects.
  • In what I think is the first instance I’ve seen of a trade publishing a casting item on a documentary, THR reports that Martin Scorsese, Haskell Wexler and Dennis Hopper are among the notables set to be interviewed for a tribute to cinematographers Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond, “two refugees who changed the look of American cinema.” Related: the above clip is a PSA Kovacs shot for Pain Awareness Month.
  • Insert “Tuesdays with Happy Gilmore” joke here: Adam Sandler’s production company has purchased an as-yet-unfinished script from Mitch Albom. No details on the script’s content, but we’re sure it has absolutely nothing to do with a youngish stoic dude who reluctantly learns a little something about life.
