Joaquin Phoenix’s meltdown/prank on David Letterman Wednesday was certainly eye-opening, but it wasn’t exactly original. There’s a long and storied history of celebrities appearing on Letterman and completely losing their shit. This precedent may lend credibility to the argument that Phoenix’s performance was nothing but an elaborate hoax, perpetrated more for Casey Affleck’s documentary than for the television audience. But this isn’t necessarily always the case. While some of the freak-outs on this list where planned, many of them were genuine meltdowns.

Bloody-Disgusting is spreading the rumor, which apparent began swirling at the After Dark Horrorfest, that Suicide Girls is developing a horror film. Narrative film production would be a new frontier for the post-goth porn site, who have previously expanded the brand by sending their models on burlesque tours, documented on DVD. But it wouldn’t be entirely unexpected: some of the Girls recently appeared in a remake of the 70s cult classic Wizard of Gore, starring Crispin Glover (see a G4 segment with footage from the set above), and earlier this month they battled accusations that Suicide Girls rigged a horror-beauty contest sponsored by After Dark. Grain of salt and all that, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
