Fear(s) of the Dark opens in limited release on Wednesday, October 22, presented by IFC Films. The film, produced in France, features animated shorts by six talented graphic artists. It looks really good, and really scary. As any fan of Japanese anime will tell you, the American idea that animated content is only for children is not only false, but is in fact a tragic misconception stifling an entire art form.

Fear(s) is definitely something I want to see now, and it’s definitely something that would have scared the crap out of me as a kid. Which is why I find Guillermo del Toro’s pullquote on the film’s IFC page so funny: “Rusty alleyways and vaporous ghosts painted by the masters of dread. Razor-sharp images that will slice your eye and nest there forever. Thrilling, disturbing and haunting. Bring the kids!” Thanks Guillermo, now countless parents are going to have to let their kids sleep with the lights on at least until Christmas.

Fantastic Fest, held at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin in September, announced a number of films and events today. As expected, the Jean-Claude Van Damme meta-biopic JCVD made the cut, as did the Leos Carax/Michel Gondry/Joon-ho Bong omnibus, Tokyo! Other highlights:

  • Wicked Lake, in which “four buxom ladies head out to the country for some good old-fashioned naked lesbian Wiccan frolicking.”
  • Fear(s) of the Dark, a collection of six animated horror shorts by acclaimed graphic novelists (see trailer above).
  • Santos, which has probably the most baffling film festival catalog capsule description I’ve ever seen: “A wild, sweeping tale of comic book nerds versus superheroes in a battle for the future of mankind. Think Ultraman with a Latin American brain transplant.”

Also: at 2pm EST today, if you’re on Twitter (check) and you’re planning to attend Fantastic Fest (check), you should send the following message to your followers:

I’m heading to Fantastic Fest (Sept 18-25)! Join me there and pass it on! New films and fun announced at http://www.fantasticfest.com

Those who mass tweet will be get themselves on the list for the Fantastic Fest opening night after-party.

  • bock.pngWarner Independent Pictures has picked up adaptation rights to Beautiful Children, the hot-right-now literary debut of Charles Bock. Bock, who was the subject of much high-profile press earlier this year, managed to finish his novel in just ten years by ignoring his girlfriend five nights a week.
  • Trumbo, a documentary on blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, in which the writer’s letters are read by stars like Joan Allen and Paul Giamatti, will open the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival on April 3.
  • IFC has picked up Fear(s) of the Dark, a French animated film which “presents the stylized interpretations of nightmares from six graphic artists and cartoonists.”
  • Bob Marley’s ex-wife wants Lauryn Hill to play her in the biopic she just sold to The Weinstein Company. Oddly, the adaptation of Rita Marley’s autobiography is being handled by Working Girls director Lizzie Borden who, according to IMDb, hasn’t worked since directing an episode of Red Shoe Diaries a dozen years ago.
