  • Chris Holland of B-Side weighs in on that whole Jonathan Marlowe-sparked State of Distribution to-do. There are a lot of fine takeaways here, but here’s an especially good one: “Gear up the marketing machine and pack those [festival] screenings, because the more people who see your film now, the more people who will buy it on DVD later…This sounds obvious and simple, but some filmmakers behave as if exactly the opposite were true. They fret about piracy (you should be so lucky!)…”
  • “One of the things that has always nerdily bothered me about Star Wars is all the bespoke weaponry,” John Carney writes. “You know, all those weapons narrowly tailored to the specific environment in which the action is taking place.” Apparently, the latest Clone Wars vid doesn’t seem to make the situation any better.
  • Anne Thompson visited the charred wreckage of the Universal Studios backlot and took a few surreptitious pictures.
  • Filmmaker/Hollywood Babylon author Kenneth Anger has allegedly “put Satanic death curses” on the authors of the recently-released Hollywood Babylon: It’s Back!, who used the title without permission.

  • Nikki Finke says New Line tossed the above trailer for the Sex and the City movie on YouTube to distract attention away from the expected failure of The Golden Compass. Peter Knegt says, “I don’t know. It feels wrong.” I say: Could Michael Patrick King actually get away with editing together a highlight reel of Best Moments from the series (Best Brunch Scene, Best Shoe Fetishism Scene, Best Samantha Says/Does Something To Betray The Open Secret That This Was A Show Written By And For Gay Men Scene) and calling it a movie? Would there be any material difference between that, and the trailer above?
  • “A woman in my senior year film production class must have seen it, however.   • What’s the deal with The Daily Reel? At NewTeeVee, Liz Gannes notes that the online video journal hasn’t been updated in weeks.
  • Pamela Cohn sends news of a last-minute event involving one of our favorite independent filmmakers/crusaders for artist’s rights, taking place in Williamsburg tomorrow night. “Jem Cohen asked to do the event before a critical deadline in the NYC regulations on street photography and filmmaking and UnionDocs is serving as a venue for a tour of his unconventional street documentaries, as well as a forum on this important issue in NYC creative production.”
  • “The area of Mexico where we filmed Silent Light is plentiful with rattlesnakes. Of course, some people are afraid, but we had the correct shots, we wore boots and, if there were still rattlesnakes, then too bad. Probably people do it also because I set the example myself.” Just one of the many takeaways from this interview with Carlos Reygadas.

    • picture-9.pngFocus Features has accepted an NC-17 rating for Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, despite the fact that it will seriously hamper the film’s chances of reaching the audience it needs to gain critical mass come Oscar time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, although the film contains no full-frontal male nudity, “male-on-female oral sex, non-S&M restraints and several nontraditional sexual positions are depicted, conveying the aggression and emotional conflict between the main characters.”
    • Unfortunately, it looks like DGA members won’t be able to enjoy any of that in the comfort of their own homes. First the Directors Guild of America said studios could send their members award season screeners; then they said they couldn’t; then they said they were planning to say they could, but now they’ve said that they can’t.
    • With male and female audiences divided over the equally drecky-looking Scarlett Johansson vehicle The Nanny Diaries, and the Jet Li/Jason Statham fight pic War, Variety says SuperBad has a chance at pulling off another weekend at the top of the box office. In related news, Knocked Up is a huge hit in Australia and Russia.
    • Anger Me, a documentary in which former child star/experimental filmmaker/Hollywood Babylon muckraker Kenneth Anger tells stories about his own life for two hours, earns the ultimate backhanded compliment from Variety: “Tech credits are adequate.”
