In the 76 years since Hedy Lamarr came on the scene with her groundbreaking orgasm in the Czech film Ecstasy, we’ve seen countless onscreen simulations of sexual climax, few of which have been more awful and embarrassing than the one depicted in the new romantic comedy The Ugly Truth. The scene (watch it here) features Katherine Heigl’s character having an awkwardly pleasurable dinner meeting thanks to some vibrating panties and an unknowing kid in possession of the undergarment’s remote control.
Obviously it evokes all previous dining-scene-set orgasms (there have been plenty), but the bit in The Ugly Truth probably wouldn’t seem fresh or funny even if there were no precedent for scenes of its kind. Though indirect, the fact that it’s a preteen boy causing the orgasm makes the moment a little disturbing, as well. We’re sure that some moviegoers will find humor in it, but we came away from the scene feeling displeasure proportionate to the ecstatic pleasure experienced by the character.

Before seeing Johnny Depp as John Dillinger in Michael Mann’s new crime film Public Enemies, we decided to check out an earlier portrayal of the infamous bank robber, Lawrence Tierney in Dillinger. The 1945 picture is a bit disappointing in terms of bank jobs, which are mostly shown in quick succession during a montage. There is one interesting robbery, but technically it’s an armored truck heist (also, having been shot by Fritz Lang for an earlier film, the scene doesn’t quite fit the rest of the movie). From what we hear, the robberies in Public Enemies aren’t that much more memorable, even if they do resemble an MGM musical, which is a shame considering how clever the real Dillinger was.
We definitely prefer a clever criminal and a clever plan when it comes to bank robber movies. Otherwise it’s just yet another taut thriller or slapstick comedy involving a tunnel dig from the bakery/bathhouse/chicken restaurant/luggage store/etc. next door. So we’ve come up with ten favorite bank jobs that involve originality and a successful getaway (a plan isn’t that clever if it doesn’t work). There have been hundreds of bank robberies throughout film history so if we’ve forgotten something really clever, inform/remind us of the movie in the comments. We’ve purposefully excluded armed vehicle, stagecoach and train robberies, though, so stick specifically to internal bank jobs.

It’s been more than 100 years since the Philadelphia Quakers changed their name to the Philadelphia Philadelphians, which was thankfully shortened to “Phillies” very quickly, probably by printers who were afraid of using up all of their ‘P’s in the printing press. Since being founded in 1883, they’ve been one of the most tenacious teams in baseball, winning six pennants, and the World Series in 1980. In fact, in all of American sports (not just baseball), the Phillies are the team that’s been in one city with one name for the longest time. They’re one game away from another World Series win tonight, despite being the Major League team with the most losses in history. Wouldn’t you?
Also, remember when Sex and the City was pure lifestyle porn (and, sometimes, sort of actual porn) and not a Lifetime movie with swear words? 1999 was awesome. But somewhere along the line, as the actresses got older and I guess and someone decided that it was really weird for a bunch of unmarried 40 year old women to be going out drinking together every night (note to someone: in New York, that’s not that weird at all), all the sex (even the metaphorical sex, the commodity fetishism and the status porn) got washed away. And now it’s movie time, and it seems like a more appropriate title than Sex and the City would be Men Will Always Disappoint Us, So Let’s Just Go Back To Our Fantasy Of Boozy Female Co-dependence While Jennifer Hudson, Who At Age 26 Has Had More Success As An Actress Than Any of Us Will Ever Know, Sings Don Henley. Also: The City.
(Also, I just accidentally let the trailer play in another window while I was typing this, and I noticed that the foley sound of Samantha biting into that cracker is mixed REALLY loud. Like, as if to signal that the sight of a woman eating when she sees something she wants to fuck is not only a joke in and of itself, but that we’ll be alerted to this and other moments of high comedy in this movie by sound effects. Classy.)
