10 Movies That Came Out Too Late

Earlier this year, I thought that it was way too late for a Sex and the City movie. But then it made a ton of cash, so I guess I was wrong. Still, I’m going to continue similarly thinking it’s too late for another X-Files movie. And even if I’m proven wrong and the masses get out to theaters this weekend in search of the truth, I’ll keep on believing that X-Files: I Want to Believe is way past its time.

To celebrate Mulder and Scully’s tardiness, here are 10 other movies that came out too late:

  1. The Godfather Part III (Released in: 1990; Should have been released in: 1976) - Never mind the fact that had this third installment been made years earlier, Sofia Coppola wouldn’t have been cast and therefore wouldn’t have given her terribly infamous performance. The more important matter is that sequels arriving more than a decade after the previous installment are almost always doomed. The longer the wait, the higher the expectations, and the greater the disappointment. Of course, not everyone agrees that it was also too late for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Live Free or Die Hard, Rambo, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, etc.

  • The Screen Actors Guild are currently without a contract. The AMPTP offered a “final offer” late yesterday in hopes of nailing the union down before their previous contract expired at midnight, but SAG insisted on giving the “deeply flawed” proposal the once-over before meeting with the studios on Wednesday. They’re probably just stalling until AFTRA votes on their tentative deal with the AMPTP next week.
  • Variety takes note of the summer’s box office sleepers thus far, including The Strangers, which has quietly crossed $50 million, and What Happens in Vegas, an alleged bomb which nonetheless will almost certainly make close to $100 million.
  • The Gillian Anderson comeback train rolls on. The X Files star has acquired a biography of Martha Gellhorn for her to star in and her production company to adapt. Gellhorn was a pioneering war correspondant and sometime wife of Ernest Hemingway.
  • Philip Noyce will likely direct Edwin A Salt, a thriller in which Tom Cruise will play a “CIA officer who’s accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. He must elude capture long enough to clear his name.” Yes, Tom Cruise has now become so boring that news of his next project is relegated to the bottom of the roundup. Such is the way of the world, I guess.

  • what just happened?Barry Levinson’s meta Hollywood comedy What Just Happened?, which premiered at Sundance to a chorus of shrugs and remains undistributed, had been selected to close the Cannes Film Festival.
  • SAG has announced nine interim deals with indie production outfit The Film Department, in an effort to put pressure on the major studios to settle on a new contract in advance of a threatened strike. Variety says the studios are “unlikely” to be scared enough by the prospect of Catherine Zeta-Jones going back to work without them to be moved into immediate action.
  • Women in Film, “a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women within the entertainment, communication and media industries,” will honor Salma Hayek, Diane English, Ginnifer Goodwin and Sherry Lansing at their 35th annual awards ceremony in June.
  • The title for the long-awaited (apparently; if you’re acquainted with an awaiter, let us know) X-Files movie sequel has finally been released. The X-Files: I Want to Believe opens on July 25.

Theatrical Spin-Offs Versus Movie Adaptations

Another bit of exciting news from Jason Bateman [again via MTV Movies Blog] regarding the Arrested Development movie: “the ball has started rolling down the hill again.” Okay, so it’s not too exciting, nor is it revelatory in the least, but at least he says all the creatives are on board. Meanwhile, the actor also commented on his role in the American movie adaptation of the British TV mini-series State of Play, which, combined with MTV’s other post about the American TV series remake/adaptation of the British TV series Spaced, has me putting a little thought into the subject of theatrical spin-offs versus movie adaptations.

Certainly those of us who are fans of a series would rather see it continued with all original talent on board (even if we are cynically fearing the result) than see it adapted into a movie version many years down the line, whether the approach be faithful or parody or an attempt at both. Try to imagine another cast playing the Arrested Development and Sex and the City characters. Imagine the pointlessness a future X-Files remake/adaptation compared with the immediate cinematic extension we received. Or live-action versions of The Simpsons or South Park somewhere down the line rather than the big-screen supplements.
